What is Play Therapy?

*  Play Therapy is defined as a dynamic interpersonal elationship between a child and a therapist trained in play therapy procedures who provides selected play materials and facilities the development of a safe relationship for the child to fully express and explore self (feelings, thoughts, experiences, and behaviors) through the child's natural medium of communication, play.

Play is the child's symbolic language of self-expression and can reveal:

  • What a child has experienced
  • Reaction to what was experienced
  • Feelings about what was experienced
  • What the child wishes, wants, or needs
  • The child's perception of self

Play bridges the gap between concrete experiences and abstract though and it is the symbolic function of play that is so important.  Play gives concrete form adn expression to a child's inner world.

Why Play Therapy in an Elementary School?

Boy MovingGirl Moving*  The ultimate objective of elementary school is to assist the intellectual, emotional, physical, and social development of children by providing adequate learning opportunities.  Therefore, a major objective of utilizing play therapy with children in an elementary school setting is to help children get ready to profit from the learning experience offered.  Children cannot be made to learn.  Even the most effective teachers cannot teach children who are not yet ready to learn.  Play therapy then, is an adjunct to the learning environment, an experience which assists children in maximizing their opportunities to learn.
