MEDIA SPECIALIST ESSENTIAL GOALS

KINDERGARTEN students will be able to

  • Understand how print is organized and read
  • Appreciate the value of books and a Media Center
  • Comprehend stories read aloud.
  • Develop the ability to attend to the sights and sounds of storytelling.

FIRST GRADE students will be able to

  • Recognize fiction/nonfiction
  • Understand and use the Follett Visual OPAC
  • Understand that print makes sense
  • Demonstrate the ability to read independently to derive pleasure and to gain information.

SECOND GRADE students will be able to

  • Appreciate and enjoy literature and other creative expressions of literature
  • Comprehend fiction and nonfiction selections
  • Use Text OPAC
  • Find information using encyclopedia, atlas, and almanac

THIRD GRADE students will be able to

  • Access information effectively and efficiently
  • Locate information in reference sources (Table of contents, pictures, diagrams, dictionary, encyclopedia and indices)
  • Develop understanding of different types of literature (folktales, fairy tales, and biographies)
  • Research – recording information from a variety of sources including encyclopedia, online sources and the Internet

FOURTH GRADE students will be able to

  • Read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of literary forms (fiction genres, poetry, biographies, poetry and informational books.)
  • Have a basic understanding of the Dewey Decimal System
  • Use DISCUS
  • Begin using a variety of resources.

FIFTH GRADE students will be able to

  • Use the OPAC with advanced, keyword and Boolean searches to find information
  • Continue to read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of literary forms including fiction, nonfiction and poetry.
  • Sustain self-selected reading
  • Acquire information gathering techniques
