 | | | The Horry County Literacy Model The Horry County Schools Early Literacy Model incorporates four of the major approaches to teaching reading: phonics, basal/texts, literature, and language experience/writing. This model is based on programs developed by Pat Cunningham and by Irene G. Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell.
Shared Reading - Students are taught reading skills in a whole group setting using big books, multiple copies, charts, or basal readers. Instruction in second grade focuses on reading skills, using text that is on or slightly above grade level. All students are working with the same text. Choral, paired, and shared readings are often used.
Working with Words - The teacher works with five word wall words that are high frequency words. Activities from Phonics They Use by Pat Cunningham which teaches the basic letter-sound correspondences for spelling and decoding are utilized.
Writing - The writing component begins with a mini-lesson in which the teacher models real writing for the class, emphasizing a skill or strategy. Each student then writes while the teacher assists and conferences with students about their writing. Frequently, the students enjoy sharing their writing.
Guided Reading - Small groups of students work with the teacher using text that are challenging but not too difficult. The teacher observes the students as they read for evidence of early reading strategies.
Self-Selected Reading - The teacher reads aloud to model fluency and to promote a positive attitude toward reading. Self-Selected Reading is often called independent reading because students read at their independent level. The teacher conferences with designated students to assess the children's progress. |
