Accident Insurance for Students

School Protection Plan

HCS provides free, limited insurance coverage for injuries occurring during the school day or while attending, participating in, or traveling to and from school-sponsored/supervised activities during the school year. The
coverage provided by HCS is secondary to any other insurance coverage provided for the student. Accidents must be reported within 24 hours to the school nurse, principal, or other staff member of the school. If the injury
is not reported within 24 hours and a staff member has not signed a claim form for treatment, payment could be denied by the insurance provider. This reporting rule is not applicable to 24-hour coverage that is available for
purchase by the student or parent for injuries that occur off school premises.

The limited policy provided by the District will not cover 100 percent of expenses in most cases. Expenses may be limited to those that are incurred within 52 weeks of the date of injury. Expenses not covered by the student's
primary insurance policy, or the District's secondary policy, are the responsibility of the parent.

24-Hour Protection

Plan For a fee, parents may purchase 24-hour insurance protection with increased benefits. Twenty-four hour primary coverage for accidents is available for $125. A 24-hour supplemental insurance is available for $50. An extended dental plan is available for $10. Ask your child's school for information regarding these plans.

Insurance benefits are also available for student injuries that may occur anytime worldwide. For more information call 1-866-267-0092 or visit www.bollingerinsurance.com.

Athletic Insurance Plan

HCS will provide, at no cost to the athlete, secondary, limited benefit athletic insurance for injuries received while participating in a school sport. This plan covers athletes involved in sports that are approved by the South Carolina High School League. There are limitations on benefits and the athletic insurance plan does not pay 100 percent of all charges. Expenses not covered by the primary and secondary insurance carriers are the
responsibility of the parent.

School Bus Insurance

All state and district-owned school buses carry insurance as defined by South Carolina law. Any school-age student who is injured while riding a school bus may be due certain medical benefits. If your child is injured while riding the school bus, contact the school principal, area bus supervisor, or the HCS Transportation Office as soon as possible. Telephone numbers to area bus offices are on page 13 in the Parent/Student Handbook.
