Updates for 2009-10:
Beginning with the 2009-2010 school year, the $4000 local supplement for National Board-Certified educators will no longer be available to NEW applicants or those who will be RENEWING their certification. Those who are currently nationally certified will continue to receive the $4000 supplement until their certification expires. Educators who have begun the process by submitting NBC portfolios and taking computerized assessments prior to August 2009 and who achieve NBC will enjoy the $4000 annual supplement over the life of their certificate.
The Teacher Cabinet will work to develop a new system of teacher recognition that could provide other opportunities for those who already hold national certification to receive compensation. It is important that teachers be rewarded for excellence, but at the same time, the district needs those master teachers to serve as teacher leaders for the Horry County Schools. Any suggestions you might have would be welcomed so please respond to the superintendent’s blog with your thoughts.
Some clarifications:
· If you are currently a candidate who submitted your portfolios for the first time in 2009, 2008, or 2007, you will be “grandfathered in” and will still be eligible for the $4000 annual salary stipend for the life of your NB Certification, regardless of whether you earn it in your first, second, or third year of the process.
· If you already applied for renewal in Spring 2009, you will enjoy the $4000 supplement for the life of your renewed certificate.
· If you are currently an NBCT, you will enjoy the $4000 supplement for the life of your certificate, but will not be able to earn it once your ten-year certification expires (even if you renew it).
As it stands, the state of South Carolina plans to offer NBCTs the $7500 annual stipend over the life of the certificate, but possibly not for the life of renewed certificates. Our elected legislators decide each year whether the NBCT stipends will continue or not. It is important to thank them for the support they have given the NBC process.
In HCS, we hope to maintain the high level of candidate support we have offered NBC candidates in the past.
Remember to contact Dr. Elsberry or your teacher of the year with ideas for alternate forms of teacher recognition and incentives.
