The SS/HS Initiative seeks to develop real-world knowledge about what works best to promote safe and healthy environments in which America's children can learn and develop.
- A unique collaboration among the U.S. Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and Justice.
- Created in 1999 in response to rising concerns about youth violence and school safety.
The SS/HS Initiative is a unique Federal program designed to prevent violence and substance abuse among our Nation's youth, schools, and communities.
The Federal Government is committed to reducing school violence. The SS/HS Initiative is an unprecedented collaborative grant program supported by three Federal agencies-the U.S. Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and Justice.
Since 1999, more than 240 urban, rural, suburban, and tribal school districts-in collaboration with local mental health and juvenile justice providers-have received grants using a single application process. These grantees are implementing comprehensive programs that address all of the following six elements:
- A safe school environment
- Alcohol and other drugs and violence prevention and early intervention programs
- School and community mental health preventive and treatment intervention services
- Early childhood psychosocial and emotional development services
- Supporting and connecting schools and communities
The Safe Schools Healthy Students Grant was awarded to Horry County Schools by the U.S. Federal Government in 2005, as a three year grant project with a possible fouth year extension. It is the goal of Safe Schools Healthy Students Grant Team to establish strong programs through the SSHS grant that make a positive impact on our students, as well as our community. It is our intent that these programs will sustain long after the actual grant period ends.
