SAT results dip at local, state and national levels

Editor’s Note: Numbers reported in this document reflect those reported to Horry County Schools from the College Board and may vary slightly from those reported by the South Carolina Department of Education, depending on the inclusion or exclusion of scores reported for private and independent schools among districts and states. 


The College Board released results of the SAT for 2009 today, revealing a seven-point decrease in Horry County Schools’ composite of critical reading, math, and writing scores. Subtests scores declined or remained the same at local, state and national levels while score composites took a disappointing dip among all three.

Horry County Schools’ composite of scores for critical reading, math, and writing is 1,479, which is 27 points above the state average of 1,452 and 30 points below the national average of 1,509. Carolina Forest High School surpassed the national average with a three-test composite of 1,541.

HCS seniors averaged 491 in critical reading, 508 in math, and 479 in writing tests. Statewide, seniors averaged 486 in critical reading, 496 in math and 470 in writing tests. Nationally, seniors averaged 501 in critical reading, 515 math, and 493 in writing tests. Composite scores indicate a seven-point decrease for HCS, a nine-point decrease for South Carolina and a two-point decrease among test takers nationwide.

District-wide, 891 students, or 41 percent of the senior class, took the SAT.

HCS high schools and their SAT composite scores on critical reading, math, and writing tests are as follows:

  • Academy for Arts, Science and Technology, 1,442 in 2009, down from 1,525 in 2008;
  • Academy for Technology and Academics, 1,354, down from 1,456 in 2008;
  • Aynor High School, 1,445 in 2009, down from 1,620 in 2008;
  • Carolina Forest High School, 1,541 in 2009, up from 1,509 in 2008;
  • Conway High School, 1,470 in 2009, up from 1,435 in 2008;
  • Green Sea Floyds High School, 1,480 in 2009, down from 1,575 in 2008;
  • Loris High School, 1,475 in 2009, up from 1,448 in 2008;
  • Myrtle Beach High School, 1,441 in 2009, down from 1,473 in 2008;
  • North Myrtle Beach High School, 1,455 in 2009, up from 1,434 in 2008;
  • St. James High School, 1,466 in 2009, down from 1,486 in 2008; and
  • Socastee High School, 1,507 in 2009, up from 1,503 in 2008.
