CERRA Advisory Board(posted on May 28, 2009)

The Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement (CERRA) recently added 10 teachers to the CERRA Advisory Board. Among the 10 newly-appointed members are two Horry County Schools’ teachers who will help to provide a teacher voice to the vision and direction of the organization.

HCS appointees are: Jean Bishop Burden, an English language arts teacher at Loris Middle School and a former HCS Teacher of the Year, and Dr. Ginger Jacobs, a science teacher at Carolina Forest High School and a former finalist for HCS Teacher of the Year.

Burden has previously participated in CERRA’s Teacher Forum. Among her advocacy experiences, she is most proud that her son is a Teacher Cadet at Conway High School and that he has decided to become a high school teacher.

Jacobs was a Teacher Cadet while in high school and she currently mentors induction teachers and student teacher candidates from Coastal Carolina University. She is a member of several state and national organizations.

Burden and Jacobs will serve on the CERRA Advisory Board until June 2012. CERRA is an independent state agency located on the campus of Winthrop University and is the oldest and most established teacher recruitment program in the country. The purpose of CERRA is to provide leadership in identifying, attracting, placing and retaining well-qualified individuals for the teaching profession in South Carolina. CERRA’s programs have been adopted at school, district and state levels in more than 30 states in the United States.
