Ocean Bay Elementary’s Kim Brown earns a national award for excellence in the teaching of writing

During the 98th Annual Convention of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), Kim Brown, a second grade teacher at Ocean Bay Elementary School was honored with the Donald H. Graves Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Writing. She was recognized and presented a cash award of $2,000.

The Donald H. Graves Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Writing Award was established in 2001 by Donald H. Graves and annually recognizes teachers in grades 1-6 who demonstrate an understanding of student improvement in the teaching of writing.

A selection committee chooses an award recipient from portfolios and essays submitted by educators during the year. Applicants submit an introductory essay of 2,000 words; three portfolios of student writing containing three to five selections showing growth in writing skills; and a teacher’s commentary on the specific growth of each student's work over time.

Brown was only one of three educators from South Carolina recognized at the national event attended by authors, teachers, and educational researchers. Brown has worked with Horry County Schools since 1999.
