Annie Baldwin, a marine science teacher at Carolina Forest High School, has been selected from a pool of national applicants to serve on an oceanographic cruise to the Eastern Tropical North Pacific off Baja, Mexico.

Baldwin will work closely with Dr. Liz Mann at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography of Savannah, Georgia, for a total of six weeks before, during and after the research cruise scheduled for June 14th – July 7th. Aboard the vessel New Horizon, the research team will be investigating to determine if phytoplankton growth at depth is limited by iron. Baldwin will be expected to assist with sample preservation and the deployment and recovery of oceanographic instrumentation.

Baldwin will receive $1000 a week, plus $1000 for materials when she returns to school next fall.  As a result of her experience, she will serve as a presenter at the 2008-09 National Science Teachers Association Conference.

For further information email Dr. Liz Mann at liz.mann@skio.usg.edu.
