Horry
Telephone Cooperative, Inc., has awarded $8,990 to be distributed among
45 District schools for recycling telephone books. Over 62,000 phone
books were recycled during the 2007 campaign, which means that over 72
tons of directories were recycled instead of consuming valuable space
in the local landfill. The Academy for Arts, Science and Technology
also collected and recycled 546 old cell phones earning the school $460
for its efforts.
The top three
schools for telephone book recycling are: Conway Middle School, 26,666
directories; St. James High School, 2,766 directories; and Aynor Middle
School, 2,666 directories.
Over
the last nine years, HTC has contributed a total of $84,060 for
participating schools to purchase or upgrade needed classroom
equipment. Schools received 15 cents for each directory recycled on
their behalf, along with coupons from Wendy's and Ripley's Aquarium.
The Horry County Solid Waste Authority is also a partner in the program.
