Earning high school credits and computing your grade point average

Students begin accumulating points toward their grade-point-average as soon as they take classes that earn high school credits, or Carnegie units. Some students take classes for credit while still in middle school. Grades
earned in those classes count toward their GPA which will be computed their senior year.

A student’s GPA and class rank will be figured from the grade-point conversion table shown on page 26. The grade-point conversion table assigns “quality points” to numerical grades depending on the weight of the course. Weight refers to the level of difficulty of the course.

  • College Prep courses earn the base weight.
  • Honors courses earn one-half quality point more than the base weight.
  • Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Dual Credit courses earn a full quality point more than the base weight.

For example when a student earns a numeric grade of 100, it equates to this:

  • 100 - College Prep course = 4.875 quality points.
  • 100 - Honors course = 5.375 quality points.
  • 100 - Advanced Placement/IB/Dual Credit courses = 5.875 quality points.

A student’s GPA is determined by multiplying the number of quality points by the number of units earned, then dividing the sum by the number of units attempted. Repeated courses count in the number of courses attempted. Students and parents should choose courses carefully. There are consequences for students who withdraw from class, including courses taken online. Here are a few questions and answers that may help:
