Today marks the final day of school for Horry County Schools students and the close of another successful school year. Throughout the year, our students, teachers, staff, and families worked together to support learning, celebrate achievements, and create meaningful experiences across our schools.

The Horry County Board of Education appointed Matthew Robinson during their May 28, 2026, special-called meeting to fulfill the unexpired term of the late, Howard Barnard until 2028. Mr. Robinson will take the oath of office at the Horry County Board of Education Work Session on June 8, 2026, at 6 p.m. 

The Horry County Board of Education named Michael Hucks the new Executive Director of Technology. Mr. Hucks comes to HCS after almost two decades of service at Horry Telephone Cooperative, where he gained extensive experience in network infrastructure, cybersecurity, and IT leadership.

The Horry County Board of Education named Jennifer Mundy the new principal at Ocean Bay Middle School, beginning the 2026-2027 school year. Ms. Mundy is currently the assistant principal at Ocean Bay Middle School and will begin her new position on July 1, 2026.

The South Carolina National History Day results are in, and HCS is once again well-represented on the list of winners!

A total of 30 projects submitted by 56 students have ranked in the top three in their categories.

Congratulations to all these outstanding student-historians for addressing this powerful theme in such powerful ways!

St. James High School’s Jefferson Sterling earned a state championship at the 2026 SCHSL State Track and Field Championships, winning the Class AAAAA Division 2 Boys Discus title.

Aynor High School’s Terianna Richardson earned a state championship at the 2026 SCHSL State Track and Field Championships, winning the Class AAA Girls Triple Jump title.

Loris High School’s Laquashia Hardee sprinted her way to a state title at the 2026 SCHSL State Track and Field Championships, earning the Class AAA Girls 100 Meter State Championship.

Competing in the Class AAAAA Division 1 state meet, McLean earned the title of Girls High Jump State Champion with an outstanding performance against the state’s top competitors.

Congratulations to Caitlyn Black and Alastair Wriglesworth of Loris High; Nicholas Wnuk of St. James High; and Anthony Giorlando, Robert Hucks, and Alexander Nikolov of Scholars Academy High!

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®) has awarded these students National Merit Scholarships in recognition of their superior academic achievements.

Last fall, NMSC named more than 16,000 Semifinalists. Over 15,000 students met the very high academic standards and other requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. While the NMSC also offers business- and college-sponsored scholarships to finalists, only 2,500 students each year receive the organization's premier scholarship. These individuals are the finalists judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Horry County Schools is once again holding our Summer Feeding Program, which offers FREE meals to anyone 18 or younger. 

These meals are offered from 7 - 8 AM for breakfast and 10:30 - 11 AM for lunch., Monday through Thursday, and must be eaten on-site. Children must be accompanied by an adult. 

On behalf of Horry County Schools, we would like to convey our profound sense of loss following the passing of our dear friend and colleague – former Board Member Howard Barnard. Our hearts are heavy and our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Marga, as well as his entire extended family.

The Myrtle Beach High School Boys Tennis Team captured the Class AAAAA Division 2 State Championship with a 4-2 victory over Greenwood in the championship match.

The certification of the Seahawks means all 9 of our base high schools, plus the Academy for Technology & Academics and the Academy for the Arts, Science & Technology, have all earned this distinction.
