The Myrtle Beach High School Guidance Department is available to all students. All matters concerning registration, course selection, credits, records, graduation, counseling services, and scheduling are processed through this office. Students may make an appointment to see their counselor during their lunch period, during their elective classes, or during a core subject class with teacher approval. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF MY SCHOOL COUNSELOR?
According to the South Carolina Education and Economic and Development Act & SC Code of Laws SECTION 59-59-120 which limits the activities of guidance counselors and career specialists, "School guidance counselors and career specialists shall limit their activities to guidance and counseling and may not perform administrative tasks"
School districts must adhere to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) guidelines regarding appropriate duties for school guidance counselors. The activities of these professionals must be limited to guidance and counseling and must not include such administrative tasks as those enumerated by the ASCA in the following chart of closely allied yet wholly distinguishable, inappropriate and appropriate responsibilities for school counselors:
