The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (Public Law 111-296) offers local education agencies (LEA) an alternative to collecting household applications in the National School Breakfast and National School Lunch Programs, which eliminates the unnecessary paperwork and frustration that can go along with the process. The LEA and school must agree to offer all enrolled students breakfasts and lunches at no cost (free). CEP is approved for four successive school years, with an option annually to return to traditional meal counting and claiming procedures.
The schools are determined eligible to participate in CEP based on their enrollment of:
- Directly certified students and extension of direct certification benefits to other household members
- Homeless students certified as such by the district liaison
- Migrant youth certified by local officials
- Runaway youth certified by local officials
- Foster children, certified based on documentation from the foster child case worker
The CEP free meal benefits are only eligible to students while they are enrolled in one of the schools listed above. If a student transfers from a CEP eligible school to another school in Horry County that is not on the CEP listing, parents will then need to fill out a Free & Reduced Meal Application online to determine if they qualify for free or reduced-priced meals. Families with multiple students in different schools will need to fill out a Free and Reduced Meal Application on-line if ANY of the students are enrolled in a school not included on the CEP listing. Students attending CEP schools are eligible to receive one (1) Breakfast and one (1) Lunch reimbursable meal daily.
Additional meals, food & snack items, and beverages will be available for sale at ala carte prices. Any charges existing
on a student’s cafeteria account from a prior school year are still the responsibility of the parent.Visit our Nutrition department page for information on the HCS Summer Food distribution program.
