Academics

HCS Early College High School students are enrolled in both high school credit and college credit courses.  Students begin taking the Horry Georgetown Technical College placement test, Accuplacer, in the second semester of their 9th grade year.  Placement scores indicate readiness to take college courses as dual enrollment, earning both high school and college credits, as early as their sophomore year of high school.

• Freshmen students take high school courses required to earn a high school diploma.  These include English math (Algebra 1 or Geometry), physical science, Civics, Physical Education and AVID. Freshmen may earn up to eight high school credits during their first year.  If ready, this may include sophomore or second-year courses.
• Sophomores may take both high school and dual enrollment courses if their placement scores indicate readiness.  Students take English, biology, math (Geometry and/or Algebra II), economics and American government, and AVID.  Dual enrollment courses may include Spanish 101 and 102, and College 105 Freshman Seminar. 
• Juniors will take both high school and dual enrollment courses if their placement scores indicate readiness for college.  Students may take English, chemistry, math (Algebra II, Algebra III, and/or Probability & Statistics), American History, and AVID.  Additional college courses in the areas of science, fine arts, communication, and social sciences may be included.  They may complete all high school requirements and may take 12 or more college credits spring semester ending the junior year with up to 30 college credits.
• Seniors may be full-time college students taking course work in a degree, diploma, or certificate program of study.  They may complete up to 68 college credits and earn an HGTC degree, diploma, or certificate.
