When conducting research it is very important to give credit to other people for their work.  This can be accomplished by using proper citations.  Understanding the difference between quoting  and paraphrasing can help you determine when and how to use citations.

Quotes are identical to the original.  They must be copied exactly and a citation acknowledging the original author must be used.

Paraphrasing involves putting ideas into your own words.   However, since it is not your original idea you must still provide a citation to  attribute the idea to the  original author.
