Want to Enroll in an Online Couse? Your School Guidance Counselor Can Help!

Interested students should apply through their school guidance counselor. Selection is based on the following criteria:

    • Lack of course offering at current school
    • Scheduling conflict
    • Makeup credits from out of district transfer or participation in Fine Arts, etc.
    • Advancement to allow for additional electives or IB/AP courses in high school career
    • Remediation of lost credit.

Online classes are available to all Horry County School students but not all students are a good fit for online instruction. In completing and passing an online class, we have found that successful students are good readers, well organized, self-disciplined, able to work alone, and have excellent computer skills. Students also must be highly motivated. Students may not enroll in more than two online classes per semester without special permission from the local school principal.

Online courses are available through the VirtualSC and Horry County Virtual School. Visit the links below for enrollment information. Choose the appropriate link below to create an account or request a course.

In addition, an online credit recovery program is available through each high school which allows students to recover credit in a course for which they may have done poorly. Credit recovery courses are offered in partnership with Apex Learning. The school guidance counselor can help students decide if the credit recovery program is the right fit.

ADVISEMENT FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES -The NCAA has very strict guidelines regarding credit for courses taken online. Some online courses may not be approved by the NCAA. Before enrolling in any online class, be sure to consult with your high school’s athletic director and your guidance counselor to determine if the online course that you are considering is approved for credit by the NCAA.

To further expand opportunities for students, HCS has partnered with the SC Governor's School for Science and Math (GSSM) to offer a virtual engineering program for qualified students.  GSSM's Accelerate virtual engineering program is designed for qualified 10th-12th students to earn the first year of college engineering credits while remaining in their home high schools. Interested students would apply as 9th graders and must be willing to commit to a three-year program with GSSM.  The deadline to apply is February 15 for the subsequent year.

More information may be found on the GSSM website.  Questions regarding the program and admission requirements should be directed to the GSSM at (843) 383-3901 x3982 or accelerate@gssm.k12.sc.us.
