English Course Options
The Academy for the Arts, Science, and Technology is pleased to offer the following English courses:
English III CP:
This course offers an in-depth study of American literature beginning with the Native American period. Students will refine skills in the areas of literary analysis, grammar, composition, research, vocabulary development, and public speaking. In order to receive credit for the course, students must successfully complete a research paper/project.
English III Honors:
This course is a comprehensive survey of British literature with an emphasis on literary analysis. Expository and persuasive writing are stressed to promote critical writings and thinking skills. In order to receive credit for the course, students must successfully complete a research paper/project.
English IV CP:
This course offers an in-depth study of British literature. Literary criticism, expository and persuasive writing, critical thinking, vocabulary, and research are emphasized. In order to receive credit for the course, students must successfully complete a research paper/project.
English IV Honors:
This course incorporates the standards of English IV but is characterized by a high degree of complexity and more in-depth study. Students must read independently and pursue in-depth, complex literary analysis. World literature and writing skills are emphasized. In order to receive credit for the course, students must successfully complete a research paper/project.
AP Literature and Composition:
The AP English Literature and Composition course is designed with the goal of enhancing students’ abilities to explore, comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate complex literary texts. Students entering this course must have the initial expectation that they will read, contemplate, and write about literature extensively. Summer reading is required. In order to receive credit for the course, students must successfully complete a research paper/project. Students will be expected to take the AP exam.
AP Language and Composition:
The AP Language and Composition class is designed for juniors who have developed their writing skills and their awareness of style and rhetoric. The main focus of study is non-fiction by various authors and essayist. Summer reading is required. In order to receive credit for the course, students must successfully complete a research paper/project. Students will be expected to take the AP exam.
English 101:
Students enrolled in this course must pass the HGTC Compass Test or have an equivalent score on the SAT or the ACT. This is a dual-enrollment course offered through Horry Georgetown Technical College. Students must have English 101 and English 102 to replace English IV (1 term class).
English 102:
Prerequisite: Students enrolled in this course must have a C average or higher in English 101. This is a dual-enrollment course offered through Horry Georgetown Technical College. Students must have English 101 and English 102 to replace English IV (1 term class).
