    Conway Middle School's Attendance Policy

    Tardies & Late Arrivals

School begins promptly at 8:15 am.  Students arriving after 8:15 am and later are considered tardy and a parent/guardian must then sign the student in.  After student sign-in, the student will receive a Tardy Pass to class.  Please note, upon a student's fifth unexcused tardy, a referral is sent to the administration and the consequence will be detention.

    Attendance Requirements & Truancy

Student attendance in middle school counts per class period rather than per day.  Excessive absences my result in grade retention.

In order for a student to receive credit for a class, he/she may not miss over five (5) unexcused class periods of a subject in one semester/term or over ten (10) total unexcused  class periods in yearlong classes.

However, per the State of South Carolina, truancy intervention will begin after three (3) unexcused  consecutive days or five (5) unexcused total days within a school year.  At that point, and Attendance Intervention Plan may be implemented.

Please monitor your son/daughter's attendance on Interim Reports and Report Cards.  You can also log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal to check student attendance.  If you do not have a PowerSchool Parent account, please contact Mrs. Sibilia.

    Absences from School

Excused (LAWFUL) absences are absences resulting from such circumstances as:

    • Illness
    • Bereavement (death in the immediate family)
    • Major religious holiday
    • Principal approved absences

When a student returns from an absence, the appropriate documentation must be submitted within three (3) school days to the Attendance Office.  This documentation may include:

    • Doctor excuse for illness (with the date and time the student was seen)
    • Obituary/Program of Service for bereavement
    • Written request prior to the absence for religious holidays
    • Principal Approval Form for principal approved absences

Parent notes do not excuse a student absence, but the reason for the absence will be noted in the student's record.

    Principal Approved Absences

Absences that are prearranged for other reasons and/or extreme hardships are at the discretion of the Principal.  Requests are to be submitted to the Attendance Office on a completed Principal Approval Form (which can be obtained from the Attendance Office),  The form must be completed and submitted prior to the absence (if prescheduled trip/event), or within 3 school days following the absence.

    Early Dismissal

Conway Middle School operated under a closed campus policy.  Students are to remain on campus from the time they arrive at school until they are properly dismissed.  If a student must leave school early, please send a not requesting early dismissal and try to coordinate pick-up time around the class change schedule.  A student may be checked out early through the Attendance Office only if a parent, guardian, or approved adult comes to the school prior to 3:00 pm.  This procedure is in place to avoid continual class interruptions during the instructional block.
