     Conway Middle School’s Attendance Policies

    Tardies & Late Arrivals

School begins promptly at 8:15 am.  Students arriving at 8:15am and after are tardy. A parent must sign their student in when arriving late.  After the student signs in, they will receive a tardy pass to class.   Please note, upon a student's fifth unexcused tardy a referral is sent to administration for detention.

    Attendance Requirements & Truancy

Student attendance in middle school counts per class period rather than per day. Excessive absences may result in grade level retention.

In order for a student to receive credit for a class, students may not miss over five (5) unexcused class periods of a subject in one semester/term or over ten (10) total unexcused class periods in yearlong classes.

However, per the State of South Carolina, truancy intervention will begin after three (3) unexcused consecutive days or five (5) unexcused total days within a school year and an attendance intervention plan may be implemented.

Please monitor your son/daughter’s attendance on interim reports and report cards.  You can also log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal to check your student’s attendance. If you do not have a PowerSchool parent account or need assistance, please contact Ms. Sibilia.

    Absences from School

Excused (LAWFUL) absences are absences resulting from such circumstances as:

    • Illness

    • Bereavement (Death in the Immediate Family)

    • Major Religious Holiday

    • Principal Approved Absences

When a student returns from an absence, the appropriate documentation must be submitted within three school days to the attendance office.

    • Doctor Excuse for illnesses

    • Obituary/program of service for bereavement

    • Written request prior to absence for religious holidays

    • Principal Approval Form for principal approved absences

*Parent notes do not excuse a student’s absence but the reason for absence will be noted in student’s record.

    Principal Approvals

Absences that are prearranged for other reasons and/or extreme hardships are at the discretion of the principal and are to be submitted to the attendance office on a completed Principal Approval Form.  This form can be obtained from the attendance office. The form must be completed and submitted prior to the absence (if the parent has prior knowledge), or within 3 days following the absence.

    Early Dismissals

Conway Middle School operates under a closed campus policy.  Students are to remain on campus from the time they arrive at school until they are properly dismissed.  If a student must leave school early, please send a note requesting early dismissal and try to coordinate the time around class changes.  A student may check out through the attendance office only if a parent, guardian, or approved adult comes to school prior to 3:00 P.M. to sign the student out.  This procedure is in place to avoid continual class interruptions during the last instructional block.
