    Congratulations to the Socastee Academic Team for winning the Horry County District Championship Tournament for the third year in a row!


    The SHS Orchestra presents a “Concert Celebrating Autumn” this Friday, November 22nd, at 7:00 pm in the Auditorium. Admission is free please come out and support these talented Braves.


    The Powder Puff Football Game will be this Wednesday, November 20th at 4 pm in Braves Stadium. All players and Coaches need to meet today (Monday) after school. The seniors will be meeting in room 324 with Mr. Weeks and The Juniors in room 129 with Ms. Yates.


    The Fall Sports Athletic Banquet will be this Thursday, November 21st at 6:30 pm in the Auditorium and Commons.


    There will be a Girls Lacrosse meeting this afternoon (Monday) beginning at 3:30 pm until 4:00 pm in Coach Renfrow’s office.


    There will be an informational meeting for parents and players who are interested in playing baseball in the spring this afternoon (Monday) from 6 pm to 7 pm in the commons area.


    Cross Country travels to Camden tomorrow for State Championships. Join us in wishing them the Best of Luck.

    Boys Lacrosse Conditioning is Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3:45 pm -5 pm. Please See Coach Fox if you have questions.

    YOU MUST HAVE A PHYSICAL AND ALL FORMS COMPLETE ON ARBITER NO EXCEPTIONS. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE PROPER PAPERWORK AND PHYSICAL ON FILE WITH THE SCHOOL, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO TRY-OUT.

     

    Clubs and Activities

    • All junior and senior students who speak and write English and another world language fluently may apply to take an exam in an effort to qualify for a bilingual seal of literacy for your South Carolina High School Diploma. Applications may be obtained from Mr. Wilson in the IB Center. The application must be completed and returned by tomorrow Tuesday, November 19.


    • If any student would like to purchase water bottles for 50 cents, come see Mrs. Gorcesky in room 138. You must have permission from your teacher to come to room 138 for purchases. This will be an ongoing fundraiser for FCCLA.


    • Please pay ALL cafeteria charges ASAP


    • “The Native Voice will be selling Thanksgiving candy grams during all three lunches for $1.00. They will be sold until this Friday, November 22nd and be delivered to 3rd block classrooms on November 25th. Tell someone how grateful you are for them and spread some joy at SHS.”


    • Attention Seniors!! There are still a few spots left on the Senioritis Tour! If you want to go, come to the main office and see Mrs. Thompson! Don’t miss this amazing experience!


    • Don’t forget to buy a yearbook! Prices go up after December 31st.


    FINAL Senior picture retake/make-up day. School Bell Studios will be back tomorrow Tuesday, November 19 for Tux & Drape pictures only. This is for anyone who has not had their senior pictures taken. This pose will be in the yearbook. Don’t be left out. There will be a $20.00 sitting fee on picture day. If you have any concerns or questions, please see Ms. Stines or Mrs. Welch.

    News from Athletic Department This Week:

    Congrats: Brooke Rogers went 3-1 at the State Singles Championship and will continue on in the State Tennis Tournament on Thursday in Columbia. Good Luck Brooke!!!

    Saturday 11/16/19 -- The Boys Cross Country Team and also Kyla Marques will run in the State Cross Country Championship on Saturday. Good Luck Runners!!!

     

    Men’s Soccer conditioning starts today November 12 at 3:30 pm. We will meet outside of the weight room. Any questions, see Coach Miller

     

    There has been a special change to the Bravette tryout dates. Please stop by Mrs. Karnes’ Room (Room 315) by the end of the week to get more information.

     

    There will be a Girls Lacrosse meeting on Monday, November 18th from 3:30 pm - 4:00 pm in Coach Renfrow's office.

    There will be an informational meeting for parents and players who are interested in playing baseball in the spring on Monday, November 18 from 6 pm to 7 pm in the commons area.

    Any student interested in playing soccer for the spring season 2020 will meet/sign-in Wednesday, November 13 in Coach Suarez’s room #217. High School students at 3:30 and Middle School students at 4:15. Very important information will be distributed.

     

    The Fall Sports Athletic Banquet is next Thursday, November 21 at 6:30 pm in the Auditorium and Commons.

     

    Clubs and Activities

    The Young Democrats will be having their next meeting tomorrow Wednesday, November 13 immediately after school in the Media Center. We will be holding officer elections and collecting our $15 dues.

    ALSO,  proud to announce that an organizer from Elizabeth Warren’s presidential campaign has agreed to come to speak to us about why she is voting for Senator Warren and what we, as students can do to get involved. This meeting is open to the community. Bring your friends and family and hope to see you there!

     

    The HOPE Club meets next Wednesday, November 20 in room 223 after school from 3:20-4:20 pm. We HOPE to see you there!

    Choose your Senior Yearbook Photo
    Starting Tuesday this week, November 12th, during lunches, seniors will have the opportunity to pick which of their senior portrait poses they would like in the yearbook. Please look for the Yearbook Staff table and stop by to choose your photo. If you don’t stop by, the yearbook staff will choose the photo for you.

    Also, please be aware senior ads are on sale, if your parent or guardian would like to purchase one.

    News from Athletic Department This Week:

    Cross Country will travel to Charleston on Wednesday for Lower States

    Women's Lacrosse Conditioning will start Monday, November 4 after school. Meet outside in front of the weight room. Stop by Coach Campbell's Room for more information.

    Girls Basketball tryouts will start Monday, November 4. See Coach Lewis in Room 108 for a copy of the tryout schedule.  

    Boys Basketball Tryouts will start Monday, November 4th and Tuesday, November 5.

    There will be an informational meeting Monday, November 18th from 6 pm to 7 pm in the commons area at Socastee High School for parents and players who are interested in playing varsity, junior varsity, or B-team baseball in the spring at Socastee!

    Your Socastee High Bravettes will be holding tryouts on November 14th and 15th for the basketball season. If you did not attend the interest meeting, please stop by Mrs. Karnes’ room (room 315) to pick up the paperwork and additional information. We can’t wait to see you there.”

    Good Morning, Socastee! Students, November 4-8 is HOSA WEEK! HOSA is a student-led organization that highlights and promotes students interested in any medical field. Want to join? Find a HOSA member during lunch on November 6 during open enrollment! Want to express your support and interest? Wear your medical scrubs for “Scrub Day” Wednesday, November 6 and every Wednesday!

    The National English Honor Society is accepting applications until Tuesday morning at 8:15 am. Please see your English teacher or Mrs. Mitchell in Room 206 for an application.

    Mock Trial has been canceled for Tuesday, November 5th and will resume on Thursday, November 7th room 130.

    News from Guidance:

    The ASVAB  (the military entrance exam) will be given on December 12 at Socastee High School.  Any student interested in taking the ASVAB may sign up in Guidance. If you sign up before November 12, you will be able to attend a tutorial scheduled on November 12 to help prepare you for the test.  You must be at least 16 years old to take the ASVAB.

    Attention seniors taking the Teacher Cadet Class next semester or any senior interested in a career in teaching.  There will be a meeting on Wednesday, November 6th at 10 am in the Guidance Conference Room.  Information on the SC Teaching Fellows Program will be discussed.

Join us tomorrow, Tuesday, October 29 in the library immediately after school to hear the stories of two dynamic authors and learn about the publishing process. Come join the fun! You could be the lucky winner of a door prize!

     

    FCCLA will be selling ghouly milkshakes on Wednesday, October 30th after school.  For your regular milkshake, it will be $1. For a Halloween design, it will be $2.

    FCCLA will be selling the milkshakes at several locations.

    • At the main entrance in the front of the building
    • At the gym entrance by the football field
    • On the second floor near the IB room

              Please dispose of your trash when finished with your treat!

  • EOC Testing for Fall (1st Semester)

    !! Please take note !!

    Students enrolled in the following courses are required to take an End-of-Course (EOC) Exam to receive credit for the course.  SHS will administer EOC exams for students who complete the following courses first semester as follows:

    December 10th – English 1 and 2 Writing

    December 18th – US History

    January 8th – English 1 and 2 Reading

    January 9th – Intermediate Algebra and Algebra 1 Honors

    January 10th – Biology

    Please make sure students are on time for their testing sessions.  Teachers will be giving instructions regarding testing times and locations as we get closer to testing dates.  Students should bring a fully charged device and a pencil to the testing session.  Cell phones will be collected during testing.  Students are not allowed to leave the test session until testing is completed.

    Important Information ~   Students are not allowed to wear hoodies or headgear in the building. This includes hats, bandanas, do-rag, sweatbands, etc.

    Wednesday 10/23 the Girls Tennis will host Berkeley at 5:00-

     

    On Thursday: 10/24 Girls Volleyball will host Stratford at 6:00 --This is the first round of playoffs for Volleyball and we are having a student section. The theme is blackout.

     

    Interested in being one of Socastee High School’s very own Bravettes, but didn’t get to tryout last year? Please plan to attend an interest meeting on Thursday, October 24 right after school in Mrs. Karnes’ room (room 315). We can’t wait to see you there.

    Have a design you want to wear and show off? Well, you’re in luck because the Brave Cave is getting ready to start our new custom design program. Any design can be made as long as it is school appropriate and not copyrighted (image for team/superhero logos etc. must have permission and proof of permission must be shown). So what are you waiting for? Come stop by during your lunch and fill out an order form!

    News from Athletic Department

     

     

    The last home game of the regular reason for Volleyball is Tuesday - October 15th against Myrtle Beach. JV starts at 5:30pm with Varsity to follow. It is Senior Night, so please come and support your Lady Braves!

    Students have an opportunity to nominate a teacher for SHS Teacher of the Year.  We have placed a link to a Google Form on our SHS website and Facebook. 

    • Be a classroom teacher, but any teacher submitted will be considered. Must hold a valid teaching certificate.
    • Be exceptionally skillful and dedicated to teaching and plan to continue in an active teaching status.  At-Will employees are employed for one year and therefore cannot be considered.  Also, must be on Continuing Contract status (must have completed two years of teaching).
    • Have the respect and admiration of students, parents and co-workers and play active and useful roles in their communities and schools distinguishing themselves as leaders.
    • Demonstrate a willingness to devote time and energy to activities, which result in improved instruction for students. They should demonstrate a desire to keep abreast of current educational theories and practices through continued staff development and by attending workshops and seminars.
    • Demonstrate examples of innovative practices started in their classrooms.
    • Be poised and articulate
    • Most importantly, possess a superior ability to impart knowledge to students and to inspire them with a love of learning.

  • Horry County Service Day

    The Governor’s South Carolina Floodwater Commission in cooperation with Horry County, the City of Conway, and the City of Loris will be sponsoring a cleanup day in Horry County on Friday, November 8, 2019.  The cleanup activities include both land and waterways (boat) and will be coordinated from 4 regional work sites within the county.

    The Horry County Service Day will focus on clearing drainage ditches, culverts, canals, streams and waterways in the area. The work plans include clearing trees, limbs, trash, and debris, and removing accumulated sediment.  Three of the four regional work sites will include watercraft cleanup in the Waccamaw River and adjacent waterways where debris is hindering the free flow of water.  Volunteers with boats/watercraft are encouraged to attend and bring their boats.

    The meeting locations for the four Horry County regional work sites are:
     Conway (Conway City Marina)
     Bucksport (James R. Frazier Community Center)
     Socastee (Socastee Park & Yacht Basin Landing)
     Loris/Longs (Town of Loris Recreation Department)

    Cleanup Activities are scheduled for 9:00 am – 2:00 pm (Registration – 8:30 am)
