    Week of November 19-21, 2018 

    Braves:  This fall students will be allowed to make up 9 days of attendance.  Those opportunities will be held after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Saturday mornings.  If you are over the allowed 5 unexcused absences you will need to make up your attendance times during those dates.  You must arrive on time and stay the entire time to receive credit.  There will be NO Exceptions.  See your administrator if you have questions.  DO NOT PUT THIS OFF!!! 

    News from Athletic Department: 

    Socastee Varsity Boys Basketball defeated Waccamaw & Johnsonville this weekend. They will play for the Bulldog Shootout Championship on Tuesday at 7:30 at Georgetown

    Today:

    • Sand and Hoops Girls Tournament here at Socastee High:
    • 6:00 Carolina Forest vs Georgetown
    • 7:30 Socastee vs Waccamaw
    • There will be a baseball organizational meeting for anyone trying out for baseball (bteam, JV and Varsity) and their parents Monday, November 26, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium at Socastee HS.
    • Weight lifting classes will be offered on Tuesdays & Wednesdays from December 4 – December 19, 3:45- 5:00. Anyone who has signed up for Girls’ Soccer can participate. MUST HAVE THE PHYSICAL ON LINE TURNED IN TO OUR TRAINER, COACH KEESEE.
    • The Football Team will be collecting Teddy Bears and Stuffed Animals to take to the nursing home again this year. If you would like to donate your Stuffed Animals to help the Football Team please send your Teddy Bear-Stuffed Animals to Coach Illing’s Office or give to a football player or football coach to deliver them to Coach Illing.. Thanks for all your help with our Football Team’s Teddy Bear Collection.

    • “Hey, braves! If you have any interest in mindful practices, body movement and de-stressing, please join the Mind and Muscle Club! This new club is open to students and faculty of all levels and will meet after school bi weekly on preset dates. Out of school opportunities will be available to participants often. For more information, please see Ms. Keillor, Ms. Ward, Ms. Bogart-Rowan or Jen Nguyen.”

    News for seniors: 

    Seniors: tomorrow Tuesday, November 20, is your last opportunity to have a senior portrait taken here at SHS.  Bring your $20 sitting fee.  The photographer will provide the tux or drape.  Don’t miss out on this last chance seniors to have your picture taken for the yearbook!

    • Seniors: If you purchased the senior yearbook bundle, please submit your senior quote and a copy of your baby picture or casual picture to Room 220 by November 30 for inclusion in the yearbook. If you still need to purchase the quote option, you may do so until the end of the month in Room 220.
    • Seniors: Are you or your parents interested in purchasing a senior ad (also known as recognition ads—these are placed in the back of the yearbook)? Please visit the yearbook website @ www.tinyurl.com/shsbravesyearbook and select the “senior ads” option to design and

    • Fall Athletic Banquet on Tuesday, November 13, in Auditorium and Commons at 6:00 p.m.
    • All football players who played Varsity and JV football this year need to pick up there football banquet tickets from Coach Illing or Mrs. Bond by Thursday, November 15. Players are free but family members are $6 each... The Football Banquet is Sunday, November 18, at 4:00 p.m.
    • There will be a baseball organizational meeting for anyone trying out for baseball (bteam, JV and Varsity) and their parents Monday, November 26, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium at Socastee HS.

    • Brave Bots Robotics Practice Wednesday in Room 307 until 4:30.
    • Wednesday after school in the Media Center, the Academic Team will hold their last home match, an epic battle against teachers and administrators. Good luck to all Braves!

    • Good luck to the Socastee Academic Team in Saturday's tournament as the defending champion Braves attempt to win the district championship again.

    • March will be here before we know it and that means it’s time to start thinking about the musical.  This year we will reach deep into the crypt to revive the kooky and the spooky…..the Adams Family (the musical).  You all know their movies, you might know the television show, but you will absolutely LOVE the musical.  It’s full of fun and laughter and great songs.  This show will have you in stitches.  The Adams are a strange bunch of characters and we are currently looking for the perfect cast to play them.  Auditions will be November 15, 16, and 17.  If you can dance, sing, and have good comedic timing, we would love to see you there.  Audition information and sign-ups are located on the wall outside the Drama Room.  That’s Room 105 near the bus entrance.  There is also a place to sign up to help with the tech side of the show.  If your passion is sound, lighting, set building, or stage management, we need you too!
    • Purchase your add space online. Ads can be purchased up until the start of winter break.
    • Brave Cave is now open during all 3 lunches!

    1. Yearbooks are on sale now. Seniors: it’s not too late to purchase a senior quote/baby picture for the exclusive senior portrait section of the yearbook. Keep in mind, this is a different, and additional option to the senior ad section of the yearbook. The cost is now $30 for a quote and picture until November 30. Still have questions? Go to Room 220 to get the answers.

    • Students 16 years old or older who would like to take the ASVAB (military entrance exam) at no charge, may sign up in guidance Nov. 5 – 16.  The ASVAB will be administered December 5.  Tutorial session will be November 20.
    • Freshmen and sophomores – A representative from South Carolina Governor’s School for Arts and Humanities will be here Friday, November 16, at 10:30 a.m.  Interested students should sign up in guidance.
    • Congratulations to Joy Renfrow and John Cetin for being named the School Winners of the Wendy’s High School Heisman!!!  They were selected based on outstanding athletic ability, academic excellence, and community involvement.  And an extra congratulations to John for advancing as a State Finalist.  Socastee High School is very proud of your accomplishments!!

    • November 13:  Herff Jones will return to Socastee High School for seniors and parents to place orders.  They will be in the commons area during all 3 lunches (11:40-1:45) and after school until 6:00 p.m. to take orders. 

    • December 6: Herff Jones will be here during all 3 lunches (11:40-1:45) for makeup orders.

    To Try-Out for Boys’ Basketball, you MUST HAVE A PHYSICAL ON FILE WITH THE SCHOOL AND ON ARBITER ATHLETE. YOU CAN NOT TRYOUT WITHOUT THIS COMPLETE OR BE IN THE GYM ON MONDAY OR TUESDAY.  TRY-OUTS ARE ONLY MONDAY AND TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK 3:30 p.m. at 5:15 p.m.

    Girls Basketball Tryouts will begin today. See Coach Lewis in Room 108 for a copy of the tryout schedule. 

    If you plan to try out for soccer in the spring, boys go see Coach Owen and girls see Coach Suarez, in order to sign in and get a very important information sheet. Get your physicals done and uploaded onto arbiterathlete.com ASAP

    • Can you spin a flag? Our state champion SHS winter guard will be holding auditions on October 30 from 6-8 here in the Commons. You will find out about our in and out of state competitions, your rehearsal and travel schedule. If you want to be part of a team that consistently works hard and shows up to win….you are welcome to attend.
    • Archery will meet after school on Tuesday upstairs in the gym.

    • Halloween grams for sale for $1 during lunches
    • FCCLA will be selling ghostly vanilla milkshakes during break on Wednesday, October 31. Come to the commons and purchase one. We are selling them for a $1.

    • National Honor Society Meeting - Thursday -11/1 at 3:30 p.m. in Room 212. All current and new members MUST bring $10 annual dues.
    • Attention French Club Members: We will have our first club activity this Thursday, November 1, after school in Room 224. Please check your google French club for more information and to sign up.

    Anyone interested in playing Lacrosse this spring, please see Coach Fox in Room 225.  Off-Season Workouts begin today, October 22.  All students interested must have a Physical on file before they can begin lifting. 

    Socastee Wrestling wants you! If you are interested in wrestling for Socastee please stop by the Athletic Office and sign up or contact Coach Gibby. We will be holding a team meeting soon. More details will come at a later date.  For now please make arrangements to get your all sports physical and upload the necessary documents to arbiterathlete.com.  All wrestlers need to sign up even those that were on the team last year.

    Attention all juniors and seniors who submitted applications for Socastee High School National Honor Society membership: Your notification letters are ready for pick-up. Please see Mrs. Wilson in Room 212 before school, at break, or after school to receive your letter.

    The first meeting of the SHS National Honor Society will take place on Thursday, November 1, immediately after school in Mrs. Wilson’s Room (212). All current and new members up for induction must attend. Please bring your $10 annual dues to the meeting. Important information will be presented at this meeting. If you cannot attend, you must see Mrs. Wilson ASAP!

    Congratulations to the Socastee Academic Team for dominating the competition at last Saturday's mini-tournament. Good luck to the Academic Braves as they continue their winning streak this Tuesday in a match against North Myrtle Beach.

    Current NEHS members please check Remind and Google Classroom to vote for officers.  All votes must be submitted by 3:20 p.m. on Monday, October 22.

    Tuesday, October 23

    • The Leadership class will be sponsoring a blood drive Tuesday, October 23, in the Mini- Gym from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. You can sign up at the table under the stairs in the commons during all lunches through Monday, October 22. You must show a picture ID with your birthdate on it when you go to give blood on the 23rd.  Thank you for helping to save lives.
    • Chick fil la is sponsoring a Spirit Night at Surfside Hwy 544 Tuesday, October 23. Benefits Flood Relief. Place a Mobile order using the Chick-fil-A App and they’ll donate 20% of their sale to Hurricane Florence victims.
    • They will also be giving away a prize basket from the Mobile Orders at the end of evening.

    • Student Council would like to invite all FRESHMAN to the FRESHMAN TAILGATE on October 25 at 5 o'clock. The Freshman Tailgate will be held in front of the school. Student Council will provide food, drinks and games for all freshman. Immediately following the tailgate, freshman may go to the JV Football Game against the St. James Sharks FOR FREE!! Student Council would like to invite ALL of our Clubs and Activities to participate at the tailgate by putting up a table and ENCOURAGING our freshman to get involved! We will see you Thursday at 5.
    • There will be a STEM Club meeting after school on Thursday, October 25, in Room 306.

    News for seniors: 

    Herff Jones is the company we use for seniors to purchase their graduation supplies.

    • November 5: Senior meeting (for students) at Socastee High School at 11:00 a.m.  Representatives from Herff Jones will be here to speak with 12th graders about senior supplies.  At this meeting, they will pass out packets that include a graduation supply catalog and an order form.  They will send packets to AAST, ATA, and Scholars as well. 
    • November 13: Herff Jones will return to Socastee High School for seniors and parents to place orders.  They will be in the Commons area during all 3 lunches (11:40-1:45) and after school until 6:00 p.m. to take orders. 
    • December 6: Herff Jones will be here during all 3 lunches (11:40-1:45) for makeup orders.
    • Seniors!! College App day is October 25 in the Media Center from 8:30-3:00.  Please attend during late arrival, early release, break, or lunch.  There will be a few colleges from SC with application fee waivers.  Don’t miss this great opportunity!!

    The Applications for free and reduced lunches that were not filled out at the beginning of the year were extended from October 3 to October 17. It expired on Wednesday, October 17.  Students check your accounts please!! We have over 500 students not using their lunch benefits for breakfast and lunch.  Please check your account at the Cashiers line and please use your benefits.     • The Braves' Academic Team will open their season on Tuesday with a match against Myrtle Beach.

    • An excellent academic record with a minimum 3.8 weighted GPA
    • At least two honors or higher level classes each year since 9th grade

    If you believe you might qualify for membership or are a transfer student from another school already holding membership, see Mrs. Wilson in Room 212 for an application. The original deadline for application submission has been extended due to our recent school cancellations. All applications must now be submitted to Mrs. Wilson no later than Friday, October 12, by 4:00 p.m. No late applications will be accepted for any reason.

    • Students interested in applying to Mu Alpha Theta (the Mathematics Honor Society): You may pick up an application outside of Ms. Stone's Room (Room 314). Return it to Ms. Stone by Friday, October 12, at 3:30.  You do not need to re-apply if you were a member last year.

    Beach Sweep/River Sweep is South Carolina's largest one-day volunteer cleanup event of its kind. Every 3rd Saturday in September, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., thousands of South Carolinians clear beaches, rivers, lakes, marshes, and swamps of aquatic debris.

    News from Guidance:

    • All 10th-grade students who are enrolled in an honors or AP class this year are scheduled to take the PSAT on October 24. All other 10th-grade students who would like to take the PSAT need to sign up in the Guidance Office by Tuesday, October 9.  Cost is free to all 10th-grade students.
    • All 11th-grade students enrolled in an honors/AP/IB English or Math class will be scheduled to take the PSAT on October 24. All other juniors who would like to take the PSAT may do so by signing up in guidance by October 9   Cost for juniors is $16.00 if you are not in an honors English or math class this year.

    Week of September 10-14, 2018

    Makeup pictures will be taken on October 25 for underclassmen and seniors. Seniors there will be a tux or drape picture and two casual shots.

    Any girl interested in trying out for basketball needs to see Coach Lewis in Room 108 to pick up a copy of the fall workout schedule. Workouts will begin on Tuesday, September 11. You must have a physical to participate

    Any students interested in joining the Archery team need to attend a brief meeting on Wednesday, September 19, in Room 310 at 3:30.

    • Due to the impending weather, the Drama Club meeting after school today has been canceled. We will reschedule for the following week and make an announcement as soon as we have a solid date. Thanks for understanding!
    • Beta Club will meet Tuesday, September 11, in Martin's room, 211.
    • HOPE is coming back to Socastee! The SHS HOPE Club is a student-led support group where students can share in one another's strengths and experiences. Please come join us for our first meeting of the year after school on Wednesday, September 12, in Mrs. Rowan's Room, 223.
    • All history Club dues payments are due by September 15 via mypaymentsplus.com

    The club will meet Wednesday. September 12, to distribute permission slips and hold discussion on the first trip. 

    • Robots, Computer Programming, & Fun - Join the Brave Bots Robotics team to drive the robot and make it even more awesome! Wednesday, September 12, until 4:30 in room 316
    • Attention Current Mu Alpha Theta members:

    Our first meeting will be Wednesday, September 12, at 3:30 in Ms. Stone's Room (Room 314).  We will be nominating officers.  See you there!

    • Hey Braves: Come to the FIRST DECA meeting on Wednesday, which is this week. Meet in the library and vote for your new DECA officers.  Bring your dues if you have not yet paid one of the advisors. 
    • The Socastee Surf Club will meet on Wednesday, September 12, in Room 214 immediately after school. All are welcome.
    • Ooh la la! French Club will meet this Thursday, September 13, after school in Room 224.  Anyone is welcome to the meeting.
    • There will be a Spanish Club meeting in glorious Room 221 after school on Thursday, September 12. Even after all these years, Spanish Club is still hotter than Miami.
    • Art Cub will meet this Thursday, September 13, in Room 130
    • Do you enjoy solving puzzles? Have you been solving Rubik's Cube for a while or do you want to learn how to solve it in under 30 seconds? Think of all the people you could impress with this mind-blowing skill!  Stop by Mr. MacLeod’s, Room 304, at 3:30 on Thursday, September 13, to find out more about joining the Socastee team that will compete in the Rubik’s Cube Challenge at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center this spring.  No experience necessary!
    • Beach Sweep is this Saturday, September 15, from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

    You may stay for a little or long as you want - we clean our beaches to keep them beautiful!

    This is a good opportunity for community service hours and help our environment

    • The SHS National Honor Society is now accepting applications for new members from the junior and senior classes. Selected members must have
    • An excellent academic record with a minimum 3.8 weighted GPA
    • At least two honors or higher level classes each year since 9th grade
    • A high level of school and community involvement
    • Outstanding character

    If you believe you might qualify for membership or are transfer student from another school already holding membership, see Mrs. Wilson in Room 212 for an application.  All applications are due no later than Friday, September 21, by 4:00 p.m. No late applications will be accepted for any reason.

    • There will be a HOSA meeting on the afternoon of Monday, September 17. Please meet afterschool in Ms. Keillor’s Room to talk about competitive events, breast cancer awareness month and our bulletin board.
    • The Leadership class is sponsoring a Blood Drive on Wednesday, September 26, in the Mini Gym from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. You can sign up during all three lunches at the table under the stairs in the student commons from Monday, September 10, through Tuesday, September 25.  Thank you for helping to save lives.

    That’s Right, Seniors- it’s time so sign up for Senioritis Tour 2019!

    This is the trip we all voted on last year and includes Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, Volcano Bay, and the all-night lock-in Seniors-only Grad Bash party!

    Space is limited this year, so hurry and get your name on the list!

    News from Guidance:

    • Seniors!!! A representative from the University of South Carolina will be here at 1:00 on September 11, in the Guidance Conference Room.  This will be a great opportunity to ask questions about the campus, the application process, and scholarships.  Please let Mrs. Adams know if you plan on attending the meeting.

    • All 10th grade students who are enrolled in an honors or AP class this year are scheduled to take the PSAT on October 10. All other 10th grade students who would like to take the PSAT need to sign up in the guidance office by Tuesday, September 18.  Cost is free to all 10th grade students.
    • All 11th grade students enrolled in an honors/AP/IB English or Math class will be scheduled to take the PSAT on October 11. All other juniors who would like to take the PSAT may do so by signing up in Guidance by September 18.  Cost for juniors is $16.00 if you are not in an honors English or math class this year.

    Cafeteria News:

    Students who have not filled out an application for breakfast and lunch assistants for year 2019, will need to do so at this time, all applicants will expire Oct 3, 2018.

    • Braves, if you like trivia of any sort--movies, music, sports, and academics... consider joining the defending county-championship-winning Socastee Academic Team. Practices will be held Monday through Wednesdays after school in Room 213.
    • HOSA will have their first meeting of the year on Wednesday, September 5, in Room 140 at 3:30. Everyone is welcome to come! Please see Ms. Keillor or Ms. Smoak if you are unable to attend.

    • It’s time to nominate officers. If you are interested in running for a DECA Office position, see Mrs. Blackmon ASAP.  Dues and applications are due no later than Friday, September 7.  Officers will be voted on Wednesday, September 12, immediately after school in the library.  Join DECA and run for an office!  Be a leader!!
    • The Gaming Design Club will meet in Room 204 on Friday, September 7. If you are a gamer, be there. We play video games, card games, board games, and whatever. Come be a part of it! See Mr. Church if you have any questions.
