Conserve Reuse

History - The students will use Our Earthday at the Bay event as a culminating activity to educate the public and other students, schools, and children.  They say the best way to learn is to teach others and this is exactly what our children do during this event.  They become green educators for a day.  They will be sharing ways to reuse, recycling, composting, rain garden construction, anti-idling activities for individuals and businesses, stormwater management practices, organic 4’4’ gardening, and wetland reconstruction. All of these topics will highlight best management practices and they will use our school as an example.  The activity at one of our booths will be a recycled CD Art activity.  This will educate and allow the children to see a practical way of reusing a disposable object. 

Timeline

September- Planning meeting for our “7th annual Earth Day At the Bay Celebration” with Ocean Bay Middle, Academy of Arts Science and Technology, and Ocean Bay Elementary was held to discuss Earthday and brainstorm ideas about activities for reuse. Local businesses were contacted and invited to participate- theme for participants is to come up with a reuse activity at their booths.

December- Students design a commercial advertisement and flyers to inform the public about Earthday activities.  A planning meeting is also held with schools and businesses to see progress of advertising and music for our April event. Collection Drive for cd’s is started.

January- Collection continues for cd’s. Students design and make road signs for Earthday events. A planning meeting is also held with schools and businesses to see progress of events planned for April.

February- Students from all three schools will participate in an art contest for this year’s logo/T-shirt design.  Students from Science club will be reusing compost created from lunch waste for planting and will tend plants for plant sale and planning other reuse activities for their booths at Earthday

March- Students prepare materials needed for Earthday activities.  Cut-outs for recycled cd art are made and bagged. The last planning meeting is held to wrap up details for April’s event.

April- Students set-up recycled cd booth and run it on Earth day. This is also the culminating event where students have the opportunity display all our schools green activities. They use activities and educational materials to inform the public about conservation.

B. What students will DO and how

            Students will create flyers, artwork, and advertisements to inform the public about earth day and the activities occurring at Ocean Bay Middle School. Students will also run many educational and conservation-oriented activities at earth day. Students will help participants re-use CD’s by creating art with them. Be displaying/selling reused bottle art. They will also sell plants that are potted in soil taken from the lunch composting program. Passports are handed out for all Earthday visitors and they are stamped at each booth when the visitors hear about each of the booths green activities.  Passports are handed in at the end for prize bags.  Student staff phone book and cell phone recycling booth and hand out free raffle tickets for each item recycled.  Horry County Solid Waste provides a U-Haul for the phone books and cell phones are sent Wireless Alliance.  OBM programs are discussed and students share how issues can be solved and what they can do to help. They will provide people with information and tools to improve the environment and promote conservation.
