2018-2019 School YearSheri Rabon - December Employee SpotlightSheri Rabon has been a Horry County Adult Education employee for nearly 18 years. Her official title is "Bookkeeper" but she wears so many hats around our school. She has supported our students and staff through many transitions and continues to do so daily. She works tirelessly to ensure our students not only achieve their goals but also makes memories for a lifetime. You will often see her behind the scenes setting up for GED test day, handing out certificates and giving students words of encouragement on their big day. Graduation is her favorite time of the year to watch the hundreds of student try on their gowns for the first time and enjoy celebrating their accomplishments. Sheri is a proud grandmother to two grandsons, Zander and Sully and loves to spend time with them. We are so happy to have Sheri at HCAE! Thank you for all you doVanessa Blackman - December Employee SpotlightVanessa Blackman is the first smiling face you see when you walk onto the Myrtle Beach campus. Vanessa said that her mother has been and will always be her favorite person of influence. Her mother was a single mother of 3 children and she always managed to hide the economic struggles we endured. Vanessa said that she is most grateful for her mother’s patience and encouragement to always be better and do better. Vanessa knows that she has learned from her mistakes and her successes because of her mother’s influence. She is proud of her daughter that will be 9 years old soon. One of her favorite quotes is, “At the end of the day you only have yourself, so learn to love thy.” Although Vanessa did not attend college, she has not closed off that chapter in her life because she believes it is never too late! In the future, she would like to study radiology because learning the anatomy of the human body as it always intrigued her. Vanessa believes in Adult Education and earned a GED at the age of 21 but started working at 13 years old. Her work experience includes being a “retail queen” because she worked in many retail stores in her teens and early adult years. Once she obtained her GED, she became certified in Medical Billing but could not find employment fast enough. The Adult Education School that she attended offered job placement services which led to a front desk clerk at a non-profit cultural arts center. This opportunity allowed her to climb the professional ladder and grow into several different positions with in the organization. Vanessa works in Adult Education because she understands the mission from both perspectives; as a former student and now as an administrator of Adult Education. She is empathetic to the struggles and challenges one may endure depending on their circumstances and she admires the dedication and perseverance from both teacher and student in crossing this bridge to continue their journey. Vanessa believes her strong work ethic and experience has enabled her to become the employee she is today. And we are so happy to have her employed with the Horry County Schools Adult Education program!
Ashley Livingston - November Employee Spotlight
HCAE is so fortunate to have a jewel such as Ashley Livingston! She is a first year Career and College Navigator. Ashley graduated from Winthrop University with a Family and Consumer Sciences degree. She credits her mother, Barbara Livingston, as her favorite teacher because “she’s still teaching me some things and I thank God for her.” Ashley said her mother modeled determination and dedication to her family. “Her dedication is what stands out the most to me. Her strengths are communication and beauty, which I admire her for.” In the future, Ashley would like to be an entrepreneur and operate her own community support service in the Conway, SC area. She envisions a place where one can come take courses to increase their education, a place where the youth can develop and have safe fun for free, and a place where one can come and relax and receive self-care in relation to health and beauty…all under one roof! “In her spare time, Ashley enjoys church activities, singing, dancing, watching movies, doing nails, and being with friends and family. Above all, Ashley’s greatest accomplishment is being a Mother. Ashley loves her position at Horry County Adult Education because she believes in chances, opportunities, and I love to see the difference made in ones life. I like to see the faces after testing and whether they are happy or sad- I look forward to seeing them try to inspire them to keep moving forward. Marie Stephens - November Employee Spotlight
Marie A. Stephens is a new Intake Administrator at our Myrtle Beach site of Horry County Schools Adult Education and has already enriched our program with her dedication and smile! Marie received her education from Miller-Motte Technical College and Medical Billing and Coding and she is currently enrolled in the University of Phoenix for Business. Marie said she is grateful because she has met many people through her life’s path that greatly influenced her to keep pounding at success. In the future, Marie says she might like to dabble in Real Estate. She says she enjoys bowling in her spare time and that she is proud of this Employee spotlight and making the Director of Education List. Marie said she transferred from Elementary Education to Adult Education in the district and she says she is honored to be a part of this amazing team and watch accomplishments being created! Marie’s favorite quote is, “If you trying to leave an impression, be sure that it displays some type of class.” Well, Marie has definitely made an impression on us and we are thankful to have her at Horry County Schools Adult Education!
Melquaam Shaw - November Employee Spotlight
Melquam Shaw, affectionately known to HCAE as “Mel”, is a first-year College and Career Navigator and has quickly become a favorite with students and his peers. He studied at Howard University and received a BA in Radio, Television Production and received a M.Ed. Adult Education and Training from the University of Phoenix. Mel believes in lifelong education and is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Educational Leadership program but he cannot think of any other profession that he would have other than his current profession. Mel had a special teacher in his life, Angela McClary Rush that made an impact in his life because she never gave up on him. His other passion is working out and helping people get in shape and he is a proud to be a Health & Fitness business owner. Mel is a member of The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated, Alpha Chapter and is also a Gates Millennium Scholar. Mel says his main goal at HCAE is to help guide students who believe that furthering their education may BE too challenging to succeed and that he loves being a part of the HCAE family because the school allows staff and students to express their identities. Tony Kroll - October HCAE Employee Spotlight
Tony Kroll enriches Horry County Adult Education by bringing an incredible amount of knowledge and experience to our school. He is a College and Career Navigator. He has an educaional background in family literacy, special educaion, advertising and loves to travel. He believes that nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care. When asked why he is in adult education, he replied, "We change lives everyday. It's really that simple." Thank you, Tony, for your dedication to your students at Horry County Adult Education!
