How many years in education?  17 years

Where did you attend college?  Fairmont State University, Fairmont WV.

What was your college degree(s) in? Elementary Education K-6.

What you love to do in your spare time? Travel and photography.

Why did you get into education?  I was raised in a poor home without much opportunity.  Teachers made all the difference in how my life would turn out and the self-confidence I would have to try new things.  I went into teaching because I wanted to be able to do that for other kids like me.

Who was your favorite teacher and why?  I was inspired in some way by most of my teachers, but my first-grade teacher, Mrs. Kerns, was my favorite.  She made me feel special from my first day in school through adulthood.  She saw my potential and encouraged me to be more than the life I came from.

  • SOAR Academy is participating in The Great Southeast ShakeOut

Posted by Jenn Myers on 9/28/2020 3:25:00 PM

At 10:15 a.m. on October 15, 2020, millions of people will “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” in The
Great SouthEast ShakeOut, the region's largest earthquake drill ever! All K-12 schools and
districts are encouraged to participate in the drill, and SOAR Academy will be participating.

Major earthquakes may happen anywhere you live, work, or travel. The ShakeOut is our chance
to practice how to protect ourselves, and foreveryone to become prepared. The goal is to
prevent a major earthquake from becoming a catastrophe for our community.

Why is a “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drill important?

To respond quickly you must practice often. You may only have seconds to protect yourself in an earthquake before strong shaking knocks you down, or something falls on you.

Millions of people worldwide have participated in Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills since 2008. The Great SouthEast ShakeOut is held on the third Thursday of October each year.
