2020 Summer Reading Initiative for Rising 5th Graders
Horry County Schools values our students and wants them to be the best they can be. Research shows if students do not read over the course of the summer, they could experience a slide back in their reading achievement. In order to avoid this, we highly encourage our students to read for pleasure during the summer. We also value student choice.
The summer reading initiative provides an opportunity for students to read two chapter books or 20 nonfiction articles from Achieve3000 OR one chapter book and 10 nonfiction articles from Achieve3000 over the course of the summer. Students can decide what they want to read with their parents’ approval. They should turn in completed paperwork by Friday, August 21, 2020, to their homeroom teacher so we are able to verify and award the celebration certificate.
If a student chooses to read books, he/she should complete the Fiction/Nonfiction Graphic Organizer on page 2 of this document or duplicate it on notebook paper. If a student chooses to read Achieve3000 articles, he/she should complete the Achieve3000 Article Response Log on page 3 making copies as necessary or duplicate on notebook paper. Students can also read a combination of the two (one book/10 articles) to be able to participate in his/her school’s incentive program and celebrations.
Once students arrive back in the Fall of 2020-21 school year and submit their documents they will be eligible for the reward celebration! The Summer Reading Incentive documents will be available throughout the summer on the St. James Intermediate site and Horry County Schools website.
To help motivate and encourage young readers our media specialist created a video for viewing!
