Guidance
A Comprehensive School Counseling program is developmental and systematic in nature, sequential, clearly defined, and accountable. It is jointly founded upon developmental psychology, educational philosophy, and counseling methodology. This school counseling program is integral to the educational enterprise. The program is proactive and preventive in focus. It assists students in acquiring and using life-long learning skills. More specifically, this school counseling program employs strategies to enhance academics, provide career awareness, develop employment readiness, encourage self-awareness, foster interpersonal communication skills, and impact life success skills for all students.
Today’s young people are living in an exciting time, with an increasingly diverse society, new technologies, and expanding opportunities. To help ensure that they are prepared to become the next generation of parents, workers, leaders, and citizens, every student needs support, guidance and opportunities. As we all know, the challenges children face, both personally and developmentally, impact their academic achievement.
Early identification and intervention of children's academic and personal/social needs is essential in removing barriers to learning and in promoting academic achievement. The knowledge, attitudes, and skills that students acquire in the areas of academic, career, and personal/social development during these years serve as the foundation for future success.
The American School Counselors Association has developed a national model which I intend to follow. There are three sections in the national model; Personal/Social Development, Educational Development, and Career Development. I will be meeting with students in small group sessions, individual sessions, and whole class sessions (classroom guidance).
Small Group Counseling: A variety of small group sessions will be offered: Cool Heads (anger management), Stress Busters (anxiety), Banana Splits (divorce, separation, incarceration, Loss of a parent(s)), Confident Kids (self-esteem), Together Friends (friendship skills), Goal Setters (organization, test taking, study skills), and MANY more! Some sessions will be year-long, others can be "as needed."
Individual Sessions: Students can meet with me individually to address any concerns from having trouble with a friend at school, family problems at home, and everything in between. Students will be available to refer themselves through you all, privately through me, or their parents will be able to contact me to request their child meet with me.
Classroom Guidance: Classroom Guidance will consist of a variety of lessons, activities, and themes. Some of the topics are: Study Skills, Citizenship, Character Education, Friendship, Respect, Career Awareness/Exploration, Conflict Resolution, Drug/Alcohol, and MANY more! For questions or comments, contact:

Gifted and Talented Information
Attention: Parents of 3rd and 4th Grade students:
At the start of each school year, parents, teachers, and administrators are provided an opportunity to refer students in grades 3 and 4 for gifted and talented testing. This referral process for students in grades 3 and 4 provides parents, teachers, and administrators an opportunity to refer a child who they feel is eligible for the program. Any student who is referred for academically gifted and talented programs will take CogAT, an aptitude test, in October. Please make note that all students in South Carolina are assessed for gifted and talented programs in 2nd grade using CogAT. Additionally, all 5th grade students in Horry County School District will take CogAT as well.
The referral, screening, and identification process is a lengthy one. Attached you will find a more detailed letter from our Director of Gifted and Talented Programs providing you with specific information about this three-step process. After reviewing this attachment, if you feel that your child may meet the identification criteria for the academically gifted and talented program, please complete the referral form provided. This form may be emailed to Dr. Smith, one of our school counselors, at ssmith006@horrycountyschools.net by September 16, 2021. If your child meets the identification criteria after the assessment, you will receive written notification from the Office of Gifted and Talented Programs.
If you have any further questions about this program and the referral process, please feel free to reach out to Pamela Gravitte with the Office of Gifted and Talented Programs at (843) 488-6740 or you may reach Dr. Smith, one of our school counselors, at (843) 488-7073.
