Scholarships
SENIORS...The scholarship list is updated throughout the year as new scholarships become available. Please check the scholarship eligibility requirements and the deadlines! You will see that some deadlines have been postponed due to COVID-19. We hope you will find these lists to be a valuable resource in your search for scholarship funds!
Most scholarship applications require an official transcript to be included in the application packet. You will need to use Need My Transcript to request your official sealed copy. Please allow extra time to meet your deadlines when making the request. Need My Transcript has an option for your transcript to be sent electronically.
Please remember to forward a copy of your scholarship award letters to your school counselor. This includes all scholarships you have been offered (even if you do not intend to accept the scholarship from that college or university).
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE KEEP TRACK OF YOUR TOTAL EARNINGS. THANK YOU!

There is still time to join the USAR or National Guard, attend basic as a split option and come out of AIT their senior summer with college paid for. My National Guard Simultaneous Member Cadets generally MAKE money to attend UofSC.
UofSC system schools charge reservists (Guard and Reserve) HALF of the normal tuition rate, roughly $6,000 per year when normal in state tuition is just over $12,000 per year USAR Soldiers get $4,000 in TA and SCANG Soldiers get $8,500.
My GBR, was a self admittedly “just okay high school student”. He was not on the scholarship track academically. He enlisted in the USAR as an 11th grader. He “found himself” with the assistance of some drill sergeants (funny how that happens). This December, he walked away from UofSC after putting money in his pocket every semester in the 4 years he was here (and graduating with a double major, double minor and a 3.7 to boot)
Long term, the Army is going to get smaller – next year the end strength will be 473,000 about 12,000 smaller than this year. This will by necessity reduce these educational opportunities. With a smaller number of scholarships to offer, the quality of the student in the “winner’s pool” will go up.
I can’t stress enough the importance of these things for your potential scholarship applicants:
- Playing sports – we evaluate a scholarship applicant on the Scholar, Athlete, Leader model. The vast majority of JROTC kids don’t play HS (or any) sports – that’s a third of their interview points gone. They don’t have to be the captain of the football team – but they do need to get on the field (any field, track, court or pool). They don’t even have to be on a high school team necessarily as long as they’re in some kind of competitive activities 9-12th grade. Run 5 and 10ks regularly (at least once a month), participate in martial arts, shoot a bow or an air rifle or skeet competitively…
- Academic achievement – another third of the interview points. Honors and AP courses are critical (but a high GPA is more important than a B or a C in an AP class where they made a 1 on the test). NHS membership. Solid SAT or ACT – no minimum to apply but we still use test scores in the “whole person review”.
- Leadership Positions – yet another third of the interview points. They need to lead something, Cadet Battalion Commander (maybe have 3 changes of command Jr and Sr years), Team Captains (here Raider and Drill teams count) Student government, clubs athletic teams. Have them start an organization and lead it. Take on a leadership role in the community or at church. Do you have a “trash pick up program”? Name the “trash pick program” The Smith High School Green Club, put a cadet in charge of it and give him or her a leadership position. “Sqd leader in JROTC” doesn’t count.

2020-2021 MERIT AWARDS
Coastal Carolina University offers a percentage-based merit awards program. The percentage-based program means that award amounts will increase to match any increase in tuition. Please see the regulations below for more details.
Students are automatically considered for University merit-based awards, following acceptance to CCU. There is no separate application process.
New, incoming undergraduate students, both freshmen and transfers, are eligible for consideration.
Students are eligible to receive only one award from the merit-based award program. This includes the VPA Merit-based and PGM Merit-based awards. - Standardized test scores – SAT (combined math and evidenced based reading and writing scores) or ACT (composite score).
- Institutionally calculated “core” grade point average (see Freshman Admission Requirements for more information).
- Rigor of high school coursework (ie. Honors, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, dual enrollment).

The American Legion’s Boys State program is a unique way for young men to learn about the American system of government and politics by participating in a mock governmental system. June 7 - 13, 2020 hosted by Anderson University.
Palmetto Boys State is the top program in the country thanks to the unique learning environment. In addition to participating in a mock government system, Boys Staters have the unique opportunity to explore potential career paths through our different schools including the Performing Arts School, Criminal Justice Academy, and Law School. It is a great honor to be chosen as a delegate to Palmetto Boys State. Many of our state’s political and business leaders were once Boys Staters. More than 900 boys are recommended each year by their teachers and counselors to attend Boys State. While at Boys State, delegates will learn about state, city, and local government. They will also learn how the political process works in our state. Boys Staters will also learn how partisan politics operate. Delegates will have an opportunity to compose a party platform, prepare speeches, and run for every elected office in the state. These offices range from mayor of one’s city all the way to governor of the state.
You cannot apply. Palmetto Boys State is a program sponsored by the American Legion. The local American Legion posts select young men to attend Palmetto Boys State between their Junior and Senior years of High School. The selection process is conducted through each local legion post. Submit the attached application to your high school counselor. The American Legion has established certain qualifications for prospective Boys State citizens.
Here are the recommended guidelines that are employed by most American Legion Boys State programs:
• Only males who have successfully completed their junior year of high school and have at least one more semester of high school remaining are considered eligible to participate.
• Any boy who has previously attended an American Legion Boys State is not eligible to attend a second session.
• Only boys with outstanding qualities of leadership, character, scholarship, and loyalty and service to their schools and community should be considered.
• In the actual selection of boys as citizens of Boys State, merit and ability alone are the basis for selection.American Legion Boys States are in compliance with federal handicap laws. Palmetto Boys State requires a medical/parental consent certificate signed by a guardian.
