America's Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in grades 3-12. The purpose is to encourage students to engage in the reading and discussion of a variety of books while associating reading with the fun spent preparing for competition with peers. A student participates by reading from the book list provided for that year's America's Battle of the Books. A typical "Battle" is a full-day tournament in which students' teams earn points by answering questions about the books on the book lists and supplying the authors’ names for additional bonus points. This program effectively improves the literacy skills, interpersonal skills, communication skills, and public speaking skills of participating students.
