Technical Scholars Welding Program
The Technical Scholars Welding Program started in Fall of 2014 as a partnership between Horry County Schools (HCS) and Horry Georgetown Technical College (HGTC). The program is designed for high school seniors.
The program consists of twelve semester hours in the fall and twelve semester hours in the spring. Horry County Schools, following the district dual enroll- ment guidelines, will cover the tuition costs for the fall and spring semesters for those students enrolled in the program. Students who wish to develop their skills further can complete an additional ten semes- ter hours during the summer session and receive an Advanced Welding Technologies Certification from HGTC, but the additional summer session tuition is not covered by HCS.
The welding program is designed to provide entry-lev- el training and practical skills in Oxy-Acetylene cutting and brazing, SMAW (Arc), GMAW (MIG), FCAW (Flux Core) and GTAW (TIG) in ferrous and nonferrous metals, including purge welding and sanitary process pipe. In addition, this program prepares students for the American Welding Society (AWS) performance certications. Enrollment is currently limited to15 students based upon time of application and acceptance by HGTC.
