• ODE Summer Reading Program

The best way to become a reader is to spend time reading!

We encourage all of our child development through rising 5th grade students to read 20 minutes a day. It doesn't have to be a book! It can be an article, poetry, menus, directions, etc. Whatever your child chooses to read, be sure to complete the Reading Response Log.

Or: our rising 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders can choose to read 3 chapter books and enter them onto their Reading Response Log.

Battle of the Books? Read on!

Next year, 3rd – 5th grade students will have the option of participating in Battle of the Books. Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program. Students read books and come together, usually in groups, to demonstrate their abilities and to test their knowledge of the books they have read by competing in student competitions. We will run our very own Battle of the Books throughout the 2018-2019 school year with a concluding competition at the end of the 2018-2019 school year (spring 2019). If you do not want to compete, you can still read the books!

Our summer reading initiative asks students to read 20 minutes a day or read 3 chapter books. Students who want to participate in Ocean Drive Elementary's Battle of the Books might want to get a jump start and choose 3 chapter books from the list below so that it meets the requirement for summer reading AND Battle of the Books. We will also have some available to check out over the summer, in the front office. It is NOT a requirement that you read these books over the summer! You may read anything! However, these books will be the books used in Battle of the Books next year.
