National Honor Society
National Honor Society - National Honor Society is the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society in the United States. Students are inducted on the basis of service and leadership experience, exemplary character and academic record, and they must have taken at least two honors or higher-level courses per year. Currently the minimum GPA is 3.6 UGP; will go up to 3.8 UGP beginning 2014-2015. The application process begins during the spring of the sophomore or junior year. Surveys of school and community service, leadership, and awards and honors are submitted by students in the spring, then the NHS faculty council reviews the paperwork in the fall of the students' junior and senior year, and transcripts are evaluated. Students will be notified during the fall if they are accepted for membership into the SHS chapter. After induction, members are required to complete and document at least 9 hours of community and school service each quarter, as well as maintain their academic standing and have no discipline issues.
