SC Academic Science Standards

In Horry County, we support the 2021 South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Science Standards, which are grounded in the vision of the Framework for K-12 Science Education by the National Research Council.

Our goal is that by the end of 12th grade, all students will: appreciate the beauty and wonder of science; have the knowledge to engage in public discussions about science and technology; make informed decisions about science in their everyday lives; continue learning about science outside of school; and have the skills to pursue careers of their choice, including careers in science, engineering, and technology.

Students learn science by engaging in Science and Engineering Practices, which are the ways scientists and engineers investigate, build understanding, and solve problems. These practices include:

  1. Asking questions and defining problems

  2. Developing and using models

  3. Planning and conducting investigations

  4. Analyzing and interpreting data

  5. Using mathematical and computational thinking

  6. Constructing explanations and designing solutions

  7. Engaging in argument from evidence

  8. Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information

  9. Designing and constructing solutions

In addition to these practices, students explore big ideas that connect concepts across different areas of science, helping them see patterns and relationships in the natural world. This approach ensures that learning science is meaningful, connected, and relevant.
