Focused Learning and Tools, Time, and Tasks

A stopwatch and the HCS Focused Learning logo are in the foreground, while a hand points to a lightbulb with a graduation cap in the background.

Horry County Schools believes that technology is a useful tool; however, like any tool, we must consider the times and tasks most appropriate for its use. To ensure our classrooms maintain a balance of digital learning opportunities and tried-and-true "unplugged" educational practices, we are implementing a new initiative focused on Focused Learning.

The Focused Learning InitiativeThis initiative aims to reduce unnecessary student screen time and promote balanced, engaging learning experiences. We will provide teachers and staff with practical tools, including screen-time tracking resources, blended-learning strategies, and professional development on incorporating hands-on and collaborative classroom activities. Schools will dedicate structured time throughout the school day for device-free instruction, collaborative learning, and wellness-focused educational tasks designed to strengthen student focus and engagement.

Our guiding principle for this initiative is that Technology should enhance learning experiences while maintaining opportunities for:

  • Face-to-Face Discussion
  • Written Communication
  • Hands-On Learning
  • Physical Movement
  • Social Interaction & Collaboration

As part of the initiative, the district will also explore designated technology-free protected learning times to encourage increased face-to-face interaction and active learning opportunities. In addition, HCS plans to consider shutting down student computer access on district-issued devices during designated times to promote healthy sleep habits and reduce late-night screen use. By establishing clear expectations for when technology should be used and prioritizing meaningful instructional tasks over excessive reliance on devices, the district aims to create healthier learning environments that support both academic achievement and student well-being across Horry County Schools.
