Alternative Certification
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for an alternative certification program, all applicants must first meet the following requirements in addition to any requirements set by the program:
- Holds at least a conferred bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university.
- Did not participate in student teaching in a traditional education preparation program leading to teacher licensure.
- Has not participated in another South Carolina approved alternative certification program

The American Board is dedicated to preparing, certifying, and supporting individuals who want to improve their communities by becoming a teacher. The training and certification program is designed to inspire career changers to become teachers and give them a rigorous and efficient process to achieve their goals and inspire learning in the classroom.
Teachers of Tomorrow
Teachers of Tomorrow as an alternative route path to certification for individuals with a least a bachelor’s degree but who have not completed a teacher preparation program. Program of Alternative Certification for Educators (PACE)
The Program of Alternative Certification for Educators (PACE) was established to enable degreed individuals, who otherwise do not meet certification requirements, to gain employment in the public schools in a PACE approved subject area teaching position based on their bachelor's or graduate degree concentrations and coursework.

CTE Work-Based Certification Program
The career and technical education (CTE) work-based certification program enables individuals with industry work experience in certain career and technical fields to be eligible for employment as a 9-12 grade level teacher in a South Carolina public school district. Once enrolled in the program, participants will attend training institutes, enroll in coursework, and complete examinations while employed in a South Carolina public school district. Participants will have a maximum of five school years (July 1 - June 30) to complete all CTE work-based certification program requirements and earn a Professional work-based teaching certificate.
