Horry County Schools will host Transportation Day on Thursday, July 30, to help families confirm or update student bus transportation information before the start of the 2026-27 school year. Families who have experienced transportation changes since completing online registration or who need to confirm their student’s bus route, bus stop, pickup time, or drop-off time are encouraged to visit the bus office that serves their child’s school. Bus offices will be open from 7:00 to 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. to assist families.

This past school year, HCS students read 68 million pages, and they're still going strong. They've already logged around 900 thousand pages this summer, and there's plenty of summer left. Don't forget to participate in our Summer Reading Challenge and log your pages in Beanstack ASAP!

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded Horry County Schools the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2025.

Horry County Schools named Jimmy Bailey the new principal at Conway High School. Mr. Bailey has been an assistant principal at Carolina Forest High School and will begin his new position on July 1, 2026.

Horry County Schools named Jeremy Rich the new executive director of secondary schools. Mr. Rich has been the principal at Socastee High School since 2017 and will begin his new position on July 1, 2026. The hiring process to select the new principal at Socastee High School will begin immediately in preparation for the 2026-2027 school year.

Horry County Schools is hosting a job fair for bus driver, custodian, Food Services, and maintenance positions on July 14 at the District Office from 3 - 5 PM. Click below for registration and application information!

Ten Oaks Middle School is proud to announce that eighth-grade students Perla Diza Vargas and Andrea Chavez Garcia have been selected to present their National History Day website at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

Perla and Andrea are among just 12 student entries from across the United States chosen to participate in this special showcase hosted by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) Foundation. Their project will be featured alongside exemplary student work from across the nation.

The Horry County Board of Education named April Scott the new Deputy Chief Academic Officer. Ms. Scott has been the executive director of secondary schools since July 1, 2018, and will begin her new position on July 1, 2026.

At its recent "A Taste For Learning" event, Coastal Carolina University's Spadoni College of Education and Social Sciences honored two HCS staff members. Faculty and staff members from each of the college's departments selected honorees who have made a meaningful difference in the community through their innovative, visionary, and collaborative work.

Reminder: Wednesday and Thursday, June 3 and 4, are 2.5-hour early dismissal days for Horry County Schools students, and Thursday, June 4, is the last day of school!

The Horry County Board of Education appointed Matthew Robinson during their May 28, 2026, special-called meeting to fulfill the unexpired term of the late, Howard Barnard until 2028. Mr. Robinson will take the oath of office at the Horry County Board of Education Work Session on June 8, 2026, at 6 p.m.

The Horry County Board of Education named Michael Hucks the new Executive Director of Technology. Mr. Hucks comes to HCS after almost two decades of service at Horry Telephone Cooperative, where he gained extensive experience in network infrastructure, cybersecurity, and IT leadership.

In observance of Memorial Day, schools and offices will be closed on Monday, May 25.

The Horry County Board of Education named Jennifer Mundy the new principal at Ocean Bay Middle School, beginning the 2026-2027 school year. Ms. Mundy is currently the assistant principal at Ocean Bay Middle School and will begin her new position on July 1, 2026.

The South Carolina National History Day results are in, and HCS is once again well-represented on the list of winners!

A total of 30 projects submitted by 56 students have ranked in the top three in their categories.

Congratulations to all these outstanding student-historians for addressing this powerful theme in such powerful ways!

Loris High School’s Laquashia Hardee sprinted her way to a state title at the 2026 SCHSL State Track and Field Championships, earning the Class AAA Girls 100 Meter State Championship.

Competing in the Class AAAAA Division 1 state meet, McLean earned the title of Girls High Jump State Champion with an outstanding performance against the state’s top competitors.

Congratulations to Caitlyn Black and Alastair Wriglesworth of Loris High; Nicholas Wnuk of St. James High; and Anthony Giorlando, Robert Hucks, and Alexander Nikolov of Scholars Academy High!

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®) has awarded these students National Merit Scholarships in recognition of their superior academic achievements.

Last fall, NMSC named more than 16,000 Semifinalists. Over 15,000 students met the very high academic standards and other requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. While the NMSC also offers business- and college-sponsored scholarships to finalists, only 2,500 students each year receive the organization's premier scholarship. These individuals are the finalists judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Horry County Schools is once again holding our Summer Feeding Program, which offers FREE meals to anyone 18 or younger. 

These meals are offered from 7 - 8 AM for breakfast and 10:30 - 11 AM for lunch., Monday through Thursday, and must be eaten on-site. Children must be accompanied by an adult. 

On behalf of Horry County Schools, we would like to convey our profound sense of loss following the passing of our dear friend and colleague – former Board Member Howard Barnard. Our hearts are heavy and our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Marga, as well as his entire extended family.

The Myrtle Beach High School Boys Tennis Team captured the Class AAAAA Division 2 State Championship with a 4-2 victory over Greenwood in the championship match.

Congratulations to Myrtle Beach High School on becoming a Cognia STEM Certified School! 

The certification of the Seahawks means all 9 of our base high schools, plus the Academy for Technology & Academics and the Academy for the Arts, Science & Technology, have all earned this distinction.

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) has announced its Distinguished Programs list for the 2025-26 school year, including nine HCS schools among those honored! PLTW empowers millions of students across the U.S. to unlock their potential by developing the in-demand, real-world knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in life beyond the classroom.  

Horry County Schools (HCS) and Coastal Carolina University (CCU) share a longstanding commitment to expanding educational opportunities, increasing college access, and supporting student success across our region. Through this partnership, HCS and CCU have developed a Summer Dual Enrollment with Direct Admission Program for eligible HCS students.

Registration will be available from Wednesday, May 6 at 6 pm through Monday, May 11 at 12 pm.

The Horry County Board of Education named James Kratzer the new principal at Loris Elementary School, beginning the 2026-2027 school year.

Yalanda Bell has been named the Chief of Staff for Horry County Schools. With over 20 years of experience in educational leadership, Ms. Bell is presently serving as the principal at The Promise Career Institute.

The HCS Summer Scholars program is a special experience that provides academic enrichment opportunities for gifted and talented students in grades 3-11.

St. James High social studies teacher Leslie Parks has been named the April Educator of the Month for SC Treasurer Curtis Loftis’s SC Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program.

The Association of School Business Officials International has recognized Horry County Schools for excellence in budget presentation with the Meritorious Budget Award for Outstanding Budget Presentation for the fiscal year 2025–2026.

Congratulations to Savannah Basile, a senior at Early College High! She has been named the Youth Volunteer of the Year for the 2026 SC Governor's Volunteer Awards. These awards are presented annually to celebrate the vital role volunteers play in advancing South Carolina’s communities. 

Smoke has been visible and may impact parts of our school district in the Carolina Forest area. The smoke is associated with an afternoon woods fire near North Shore Drive and Red Wolf Trail, near the Black Creek subdivision.

School District leadership and operations are actively monitoring conditions and have implemented several actions to ensure a safe environment for our students and staff. 

April is the Month of the Military Child, a time to recognize and celebrate the strength, resilience, and sacrifices of students whose families serve in our armed forces.

We encourage everyone to wear purple on April 22 for Purple Up Day as a visible show of support and appreciation for military children across our district and community.

The Horry County Board of Education ("Board") seeks to fill a vacancy in its membership for the seat representing the unexpired term for District 5. The vacancy shall be filled by appointment of the Board until the 2028 General Election, at which time a member will be elected from District 5 for the new term which is from 2028 to 2032.

Mindi Penn, theatre teacher at the Academy for the Arts, Science & Technology, has been named the recipient of the 2026 Deborah Smith Hoffman Outstanding Mentor Teacher Award.

Congratulations to Loris High and Aynor High on becoming Cognia STEM Certified Schools! The Lions and Blue Jackets bring the number of STEM Certified HCS high schools up to ten! 

Congratulations to Carolina Forest High senior Subee Vongsavanh! Her art won the 2026 Cheerwine Festival Design Contest and will be featured on the festival's t-shirts.

Over the last few months, dozens of HCS high schoolers have attended state conferences for various career education organizations, including the Technology Student Association (TSA), Future Health Professionals (HOSA), and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). They’ve learned from career experts, competed in skill and knowledge challenges, and even run for office! Any first-place winners will continue to their respective national conference, held over the summer.

The Academy for the Arts, Science & Technology’s robotics team, Aluminum Assault, delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 FIRST Robotics South Carolina State Championship. The team earned the Industrial Design Award, recognizing excellence in their robot’s form, function, and integration of mechanical systems.

Smoke has been visible and impacting parts of our school district (Conway, Aynor, and Loris). The smoke is associated with a contained wildfire in Marion County (Woodbury area) and likely could linger for a few more days. Again, the fire is contained, and there is no current public safety risk to Horry County. School District leadership and operations are actively monitoring conditions and have implemented several actions to ensure a safe environment for our students and staff.

Mr. Clifford Jones, Superintendent of Horry County Schools, will be holding “Coffee and Conversation with Cliff” events throughout the school year.

The events will both consist of informal listening sessions and discussions. Everyone is invited, and no registration or appointment is needed. Come to any event that meets your schedule.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of 21 Horry County Schools students as Finalists in the 71st annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These HCS students will have an opportunity to win one of over 6,900 National Merit Scholarships worth a combined total of nearly $26 million.

Congratulations to Jessica Harrell, St. James High's cheer coach! She has been selected to participate in the Tomorrow's 25 Coaching Fellowship — a 10-month program designed to invest in 25 coaches from across the state who have been deemed emerging leaders in high school and middle school athletics.

This past weekend, a team of 8 St. James Sharks participated in the 39th High School Math Competition at USC in Columbia, where they divided their opponents, multiplied their wins, and added a trophy to their shelf!

The HCS leadership team is actively monitoring weather advisories related to the winter storm expected to impact our region this weekend, as well as its potential effects for school operations on Monday, January 26. HCS will issue an update to staff and parents no later than 11 a.m. on Sunday, January 25th, regarding any potential alterations to the schedule for Monday.

Socastee High teacher Lucia Watson has been named the 2025 Teacher Educator of the Year by South Carolina Health Science Educators, a division of the SC Association for Career and Technical Education. Congratulations, Ms. Watson!

For the third year in a row, the Conway High School FFA program has another state champion team! This year, the team brought home first place in the Soil Judging Career Development Event.

Congratulations to Phyllis Elvington! Our Green Sea Floyds High coach has been named the 2025 1A Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year by the South Carolina Track and Cross Country Coaches Association!

Our district Fine Arts Calendar is your one-stop shop to get in the spirit of the season. From show choirs and orchestras to tree lightings, plays, and band concerts, our schools offer something for everyone.

Congratulations to Conway Elementary School’s Go Green Club, led by STEM teacher Sandra Matthews, on winning a Champion of the Environment Award this year from the SC Department of Environmental Services! They are one of 13 schools to win the award this year, out of 85 applicants.

Congratulations to the Socastee High Theatre Company. They competed at the South Carolina Theatre Association’s annual convention and brought home major awards.

Socastee won the Studio Series competition and the Overall Best Ensemble Award. Individual honors were also earned by director Meredith Taylor, who won Best Director, and by Justin Rivera, who won Best Actor. Landen Christensen, Quion Johnson Allen, and Parker Vile were named to the All-Star Cast.

Socastee will represent Horry County at the Southeastern Theatre Conference in March in Chattanooga, TN.

Congratulations to the Myrtle Beach High Theatre Company. They competed at the South Carolina Theatre Association’s annual convention and brought home major awards.

Each Horry County School has selected its Teacher of the Year for the 2025-26 school year. These outstanding educators will be evaluated in the coming months, and one of them will be named the 2027 Horry County Schools Teacher of the Year in the spring. On last year’s report card, HCS Scholars Academy High School was ranked the #1 high school in the state. This year, the school went a step further, earning a report card score of 99.7 out of 100, which ranks it #1 among all 1,309 schools in the state that receive a report card, regardless of grade level. Horry County Schools’ performance on the 2025 state report cards, based on overall ratings, shows that 38 out of 57 district schools were rated as Excellent or Good. Of those, 16 HCS schools were rated Excellent and 22 were rated Good, while 18 earned a score of Average.

On Monday, November 3, marching bands from across the district will once again come together for the annual HCS Band Extravaganza. 

HCS welcomes the county's first Parker's Kitchen, which held its ribbon-cutting ceremony at its new location in Conway on Monday, October 27. At the ceremony, Parker's Kitchen presented HCS with a $5,000 check as part of its Fueling the Community program

To honor all veterans who have served or are currently serving in our Armed Forces, JROTC departments from across HCS will come together for the inaugural HCS Veterans Day Ceremony.

This event will be held at the Conway High School football stadium at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 8. Everyone is invited!

Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated October 23–31, 2025.

The National Family Partnership (NFP) has announced the theme for 2025 Red Ribbon Week is“Life Is a Puzzle, Solve It Drug Free.”

This year’s theme reminds students that every decision they make is an important piece of life’s larger puzzle. Choosing to live drug-free helps create a complete picture of health, success, and well-being.

The Horry County Board of Education announced that Dr. David Benson is the newly appointed Executive Director of Transportation for Horry County Schools. Dr. Benson has most recently held the position of Director of Student Transportation for the past 19 years, out of his 30-year career in education at Chesapeake Public Schools in Virginia.

The South Carolina State Fair is an annual event held in Columbia every year since 1869. Over the years, it has also added art competitions to its annual lineup. Several Horry County students submitted their artwork to this year’s fair, and we're proud to announce 6 of our students placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in their categories!

Myrtle Beach High's Sarah Merli has been recognized by the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program as one of their Distinguished Teachers for 2025.

Four Horry County Board of Education members earned recognition from the South Carolina School Boards Association (SCSBA) for achievement in the association’s 2024-2025 Boardmanship Institute.  

Wendy Hodges (District 4) and Darrell Ricketts (District 11) both received certificates for completing Level One. Tracy Winters (District 3) and James Edwards (District 9) completed Level Three, earning them both a certificate and a gold pin in recognition of their accomplishments

September 17 through 23 is Constitution Week, which celebrates the foundational document that shapes our nation.

Tracie Mitchell, a special education teacher at North Myrtle Beach High, has been awarded the Richard M. Kuffel Excellence in Education Award from the SC Vocational Rehabilitation Department (SCVRD). This award is presented to someone who understands the importance of collaborative partnerships and exemplifies an innovative approach to providing quality services to students.

For the fourth year in a row, HCS students in kindergarten through fifth grade participated in READCamp, a free virtual summer reading training camp for kids led by author and Super Bowl champion Malcolm Mitchell and his Share the Magic Foundation. Our students competed against over 45,000 students from all 50 states and five countries to see who would read the most books this summer.

This year, over 11,400 HCS students read over 24,000 books over the summer, with 1,330 students earning the title of “READCamp MVP” by reading at least 12 books. Another 1,580 students read at least eight books, making them “READCamp Champions.”

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of 26 Horry County Schools students as Semifinalists in the 71st annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These HCS students are among approximately 16,000 Semifinalists who have an opportunity to compete for nearly 7,000 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $26 million.

Rise with Reading is a districtwide literacy challenge designed to motivate and celebrate reading among our 48,000 K-12 students. Through achievable goals, recognition, and engaging resources, we aim to build a community of readers and celebrate the joy of learning.

Horry County Schools received a Capital Credit refund from HTC. The HTC Board of Directors approved a 2025 Capital Credit refund of approximately $8.8 million in total to its membership.

HCS students outperformed the state average on all state summative assessments in 2024-2025.

64% of HCS 3rd through 8th graders scored at the highest levels of performance on the SC Ready ELA assessment in 2024-2025 – the highest percentage in Horry County since the test was initiated 10 years ago. 

76.2% of HCS third-year high school students earned their College-and-Career Readiness credential on the South Carolina Career Readiness assessment in 2024-2025, 7 percentage points higher than the state overall.

Congratulations to the Loris High FFA! Their chapter has been selected as a 2025 National Chapter Model of Excellence. Out of over 9,000 FFA chapters in the nation, Loris FFA is one of only 10 to earn this distinction.

Congratulations to Kimberly Myers, the Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at Aynor High School! The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences has announced that she was a finalist for their 2025 National Teacher of the Year award!

Lindsay Lennon, the principal at Ten Oaks Middle School, has been given the Patriot Award by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, which is an office of the Department of Defense. She was nominated by Michael Merolle, who is a teacher at Ten Oaks Middle and also a member of the National Guard.

South Carolina’s annual Tax Free Weekend is  August 1-3, 2025.

James LaPier has been named an Executive Director of Elementary Education.  Mr. LaPier most recently served as the Director of Instructional Programs & Services and previously served as a principal at North Myrtle Beach Middle School and Lakewood Elementary School. 

Guoxin Zhong, a 2025 graduate from Scholars Academy High, has won the National Trig-Star Competition! Trig-Star is a competition sponsored by the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) that recognizes and rewards high school students who excel in mathematics, particularly Trigonometry, and their teachers.

The SC Band Directors Association (SCBDA) and the SC Music Educators Association (SCMEA) have announced that six HCS music programs have earned an Outstanding Performance Award for the 2024-25 school year!

The Academy for the Arts, Science & Technology’s Plant the Moon Challenge team won the Best in Innovation award, one of only four awards given to South Carolina high school teams in the competition.

The South Carolina National History Day results are in, and HCS is once again well-represented on the list of winners!

More than 800,000 students worldwide, including tens of thousands in South Carolina, participated in this year's READBowl, a global reading competition held between the College Football National Championship and the Super Bowl.

HCS is home to two conference-winning teams this year, marking the third consecutive year the district has fielded winning teams. Team KIDD, taught by April Kidd at Myrtle Beach Early Childhood School, won the Primary (PreK-2) Conference. Wendy Nixon’s “Nixon A4” team at Ten Oaks Middle won the Middle (6-8) Conference.

Grant Hall, an agriculture teacher at Aynor High, has received the Advisor of the Year Award from the South Carolina Farmer and Agribusiness Association (SCFAA).

Horry County Schools (HCS) was recently informed about an international cybersecurity data breach involving our student information system provider, PowerSchool.

After an internal district investigation by the HCS Information Technology Department, no data from the district was affected or compromised by the cybersecurity breach.

Congratulations to April Troglauer, the orchestra teacher at Aynor Middle! Her article “Using Chamber Music and Reflection to Foster Student Engagement in Orchestra” was selected for publication in the Music Educators Journal.

On Monday, Dec. 9, the Horry County Board of Education announced the top three finalists for Horry County Schools' next superintendent. The finalists include Dr. Jonathan Crossley, Mr. Clifford R. Jones, and Dr. Michael Thorsland. Dr. Jonathan Crossley is currently the superintendent of Hope School District in Hope, Arkansas; Mr. Clifford R. Jones is currently the Chief of Staff of Fulton County Schools in Fulton, Georgia; and Dr. Michael Thorsland is currently the superintendent of the School District of Oconee County in Walhalla, South Carolina.

The Horry County Board of Education is in the final phase of its search for a new superintendent to lead Horry County Schools. The Board will announce the top three finalists at its December 9 meeting.

The Horry County Board of Education named Andrena Baker the new principal at the new Ten Oaks Elementary School, beginning the 2025-2026 school year. Andrena Baker is currently the assistant principal at Myrtle Beach Middle School and will begin her new position in January 2025.

The Horry County Board of Education named Dr. Michael Raymond the new principal at the new Pine Island Elementary School, beginning the 2025-2026 school year. Dr. Michael Raymond is currently the principal at Switlik Elementary School in Jackson, New Jersey. He will begin his new position in January 2025.

This year, 16 Horry County Schools received the Distinguished Arts Program Grant from the South Carolina Department of Education. This grant provides $18,000 to a school for one school year!

On October 1, the Horry Soil & Water Conservation District (associated with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources) hosted an awards banquet that honored several Horry County Schools students and staff members.

Jenna is the Class AAAAA Division 2 Girls 100 Butterfly State Champion!

Valued at $10,000, this package is SFR’s way of giving back to the state that ignited the organization’s passion for serving delicious, nutritious meals that support student success in the classroom.

In an amazing showing, Scholars Academy High School earned a 99.34 out of 100, making it the highest-scoring school in the state!

Horry County Schools’ performance on the 2024 state report cards, based on overall ratings, shows that 36 out of 50 district schools (72%) were rated as Excellent or Good. Of those,14 HCS schools were rated Excellent, while 22 were rated Good. No HCS schools were rated Below Average or Unsatisfactory.

Twelve HCS students placed or received an honorable mention, and our students swept the 12th Grade Photography category!

Three Horry County schools have received STEM certification from Cognia, a non-profit education accreditation and assessment agency. The Academy for Technology & Academics, Conway High School, and St. James High School met Cognia’s STEM Certification Standards.

The Sun Belt Conference, Coastal Carolina University (CCU), and the CCU football program announced that CCU has received a $6,000 gift from the College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation and their Extra Yard for Teachers program.

On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, the American Heart Association (AHA) announced that Horry County was the #1 lifesaving district in South Carolina and the #13 lifesaving district nationally.

The HTC Board of Directors approved a 2024 Capital Credit refund of approximately $7.6 million in total to its membership.

Connor is one of only twenty students in the entire state that scored a perfect score on both the English Language Arts and Math SC Ready assessments.

Performance results released by the South Carolina Department of Education for the 2023-2024 school year indicate that Horry County Schools consistently outperformed the state on three major standardized state assessments: SC READY, the End-of-Course Examination Program, and the SC Career Ready Test.

Six Horry County Board of Education members earned recognition from the South Carolina School Boards Association (SCSBA) for achievement in the association’s 2023-2024 Boardmanship Institute.

As part of our ongoing efforts to prioritize the safety and security of our schools, we are implementing a clear backpack protocol for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. 

The Horry County Board of Education appointed Dr. Eddie Ingram as the interim superintendent of Horry County Schools on May 15, 2024, and he will begin his employment on July 1, 2024.

During the Board Work Session on Monday, June 10, 2024, the Horry County Board of Education made several appointments to district administrative positions.
