HCS 2025 State Assessment Results
Horry County Schools students fared better than their counterparts statewide on a trio of major benchmarks last year, according to results recently released by the South Carolina Department of Education.
Scores on SC READY — a standardized test for third through eighth graders in English, math, and science — are reported as “exceeds standard,’ “meets standard,” “approaches standard,” or “does not meet standard” in all areas.
HCS students scoring at the “meets or exceeds standard” levels on the English portion of SC READY exams were 4.1 percentage points higher than state averages, while math scores in those categories were 7 percentage points higher. The percentage of HCS third graders scoring at the “meets or exceeds” level on the ELA assessment increased by over 5 percentage points from the previous year.
Science assessment results will be included again on the 2025 state report cards after changes in standards excluded them from accountability reports last year. HCS students in grades four and six were 7.45 percentage points higher overall than state averages for students scoring at the “meets or exceeds standard.”
The End-of-Course Examination Program, or EOCEP, measures achievement in four core high school courses: Algebra I, Biology, English II, and U.S. History and Constitution.
HCS students surpassed state averages on all four tests.
In Algebra I, 90% of district students passed the exam, up 2 percentage points from last year and ahead of the state’s average passage rate of 74%
In Biology, 70.3% of district students passed the exam, compared to 61.7% statewide.
In English II, 89.6% of district students passed the exam, a 2 percentage point increase from last year and ahead of the state’s average passing rate of 86.4%.
In U.S. History and Constitution, 71.7% of district students passed the exam, compared to 61.5% statewide.
The South Carolina Career Ready Test is given to third-year high school students to measure employability skills in math, reading, and data. Assessments are given an achievement and scale score from one to five based on federal Department of Education standards.
To be career-ready, students must score a three or higher.
Of the 3,779 HCS students who completed all three employability skills assessments, 76.2% received a credential, with 58.5% earning a three or higher. Statewide, just 48.9% did so.
