HCS makes a five-point gain in Advanced Placement pass rate
The College Board reports that Horry County Schools made an impressive five-point gain in the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on Advanced Placement (AP) exams during the 2017-2018 school year. Newly-released data show that 66 percent of District students attained scores of 3, 4, or 5 on exams, up from 61 percent the previous year. The percentage of HCS students passing AP exams is higher than the State’s 58 percent, which is higher than 57 percent at the national level.
More HCS students participated in the AP program, up from 2,075 in the school year ending in 2017, to 2,148 for the school year ending in 2018. Students took more AP classes and 3,213 exams, a slight increase over 3,203 exams taken the previous year.
The College Board report indicates seven District schools where the percentage of students scoring at the highest levels on AP exams is higher than the national percentage: They are: the Academy for Arts, Science & Technology, 81 percent; Carolina Forest High School, 72 percent; Conway High School, 70 percent; Myrtle Beach High School, 70 percent; North Myrtle Beach High School, 68 percent; Socastee High School, 67 percent; and St. James High School, 66 percent.
