Vanessa Blackman - December Employee Spotlight

Vanessa Blackman is the first smiling face you see when you walk onto the Myrtle Beach campus.  Vanessa said that her mother has been and will always be her favorite person of influence. Her mother was a single mother of 3 children and she always managed to hide the economic struggles we endured. Vanessa said that she is most grateful for her mother’s patience and encouragement to always be better and do better.  Vanessa knows that she has learned from her mistakes and her successes because of her mother’s influence. She is proud of her daughter that will be 9 years old soon. One of her favorite quotes is, “At the end of the day you only have yourself, so learn to love thy.”  Although Vanessa did not attend college, she has not closed off that chapter in her life because she believes it is never too late! In the future, she would like to study radiology because learning the anatomy of the human body has always intrigued her. Vanessa believes in Adult Education and earned a GED at the age of 21 but started working at 13 years old. Her work experience includes being a “retail queen” because she worked in many retail stores in her teens and early adult years. Once she obtained her GED, she became certified in Medical Billing but could not find employment fast enough. The Adult Education School that she attended offered job placement services which led to a front desk clerk at a non-profit cultural arts center.  This opportunity allowed her to climb the professional ladder because she “wore many hats”. Vanessa works in Adult Education because she understands the mission from both perspectives; as a former student and now as an administrator of Adult Education. She is empathetic to the struggles and challenges one may endure depending on their circumstances and she admires the dedication and perseverance from both teacher and student in crossing this bridge to continue their journey.  Vanessa believes her strong work ethic and experience has enabled me to become the employee I am today. And we are so happy to have her employed with the Horry County Schools Adult Education program!
