HCS and Super Bowl Champion Malcolm Mitchell Team Up to Tackle Summer Reading
This summer, Horry County Schools elementary students are again participating in READCamp, a virtual training camp for summer reading that is “coached” by author and Super Bowl champion Malcolm Mitchell. Last summer, students read more than 15,000 books, with more than 2,500 students earning "Championship" status with eight books logged and more than 1,000 students earning "MVP Reader" status by logging 12 or more books.
This summer, HCS students are looking to defend their status from last year as the country's top school district of summer readers. They are poised to top last year’s records as students from all 27 elementary schools are set to participate in READCamp 2023, a Read with Malcolm program. READCamp opened on Memorial Day, and HCS students have already racked up more than 1,000 books.
"When I was in the NFL,” said Mitchell, “there was nothing more important than training camp. It was our time to focus on key elements of our game, stay in shape, and be ready to win in the fall. This is the mentality my Foundation and I bring to READCamp. It is vitally important to maintain reading in the summer. Nobody embraces this more than HCS. I am blown away by the dedication, energy, and passion for reading among the students, teachers, and families in Horry County Schools. I'd like to give a big shout-out to the media specialists, who are the school's head coaches, and to Ann Moore, the champion of our programs. And, of course, to the Superintendent of the Year, Dr. Maxey. No doubt HCS will tackle all the previous records on their way to the Hall of Fame."
Students were given READCamp usernames and passwords by their schools to sign in and log their books this summer. READCamp also provides printed reading logs. The READCamp "Training Protocol" offers training camp suggestions but empowers parents and students to choose their own book titles during the program.
