North Myrtle Beach High Teacher Wins Teacher of Excellence Award

January 19, 2023

Jennifer Wells award photoJennifer Wells, an English teacher at North Myrtle Beach High, won the High School Teacher of Excellence Award at the South Carolina Council of Teachers of English (SCCTE) conference, which was held on January 13-14. This puts Ms. Wells in the running for the national level of the award from the National Council of Teachers of English

Members of SCCTE nominate candidates for the award, and Wells says she didn’t even know she had been nominated before finding out she won, which she says was a wonderful surprise.

Dr. Kay Sellers, one of the presidents of SCCTE and a teacher at Carolina Forest High, presented the award and shared some of the comments from Wells’s nomination letters. One of the comments said that Wells “supports her students in the classroom, mentors new teachers, develops curriculum, presents district-wide staff development, and provides valuable instructional strategies and resources for multilingual learners that are used in all content areas. She creates an atmosphere of literacy, cultural awareness, sensitivity, and success that fuels her students to strive for excellence.” Another said that Wells is a “leader in the area of English Language Arts who tactfully leads by example, providing many professional development sessions not only for English teachers in the district but also for teachers in statewide conferences. She fosters a warm, inviting, safe, and secure classroom environment by promoting positive relationships and connections between adults and students by adapting and integrating new and existing strategies for communication and curriculum in a way that is both helpful and meaningful.” Dr. Sellers added that Wells is an inspiration to students and fellow educators and that she is a ray of positive energy whenever she enters a room.

HCS congratulates Ms. Wells, thanks her for her service to students and her fellow teachers, and wishes her luck as she proceeds to the national award level.
