ATA Students Show Their Skills at SkillsUSA
March 23, 2023
On Friday, March 17th, Halle Campbell and Elijah Herrington—both in the engineering pathway at the Academy for Technology and Academics (ATA)—attended the South Carolina SkillsUSA conference in Greenville. SkillsUSA serves students in middle school, high school, and college who are preparing for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service occupations by helping them develop personal, workplace, and technical skills.
At the conference, students showcased some of those skills in competitions such as architectural drafting, building maintenance, carpentry, cybersecurity, and many more. As students at ATA, Halle and Elijah have the opportunity to earn their operator’s license for small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS, which is the official term for a drone), so they competed in the commercial sUAS operations category. For the competition, they had to take a written test about drone operations and then complete a drone flight challenge.
Their practice at school paid off, and Halle and Elijah won first place! As winners in their category, they will go to the national competition, which will take place in Atlanta in June.
Congratulations on your victory, Halle and Elijah, and good luck at the nationals!
