HCS receives national recognition for music education

HCS namm award Horry County Schools has received the prestigious Best Communities for Music Education designation from the NAMM Foundation. The Foundation advances life-long participation in music making by supporting scientific research, philanthropic giving, and public service programs and it is supported by the National Association of Music Merchants. HCS is one of only six school districts in South Carolina to have earned the Best Communities for Music Education distinction this year.

Now in its 20th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. To qualify for the designation, HCS responded to detailed inquiries about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instructional time, facilities, and support for the music education programs. This award recognizes that HCS is leading the way with learning opportunities as outlined in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which recommends music and the arts as important elements of a well-rounded education for all children.

HCS met and exceeded award criteria, to include: having music education in all schools and additional offerings of band, chorus, dance, orchestra, and theatre; serving diverse populations of students; providing highly-qualified teachers to deliver music instruction; maintaining class sizes that are conducive to music instruction; and serving diverse populations of students.
